I am rebuilding by grandfather's WD45 diesel.  The previous owner ran the transmission and rearend dry.  He wore out the differential ring gear and pinion shaft bearings.  The bearing spun and ruined the housing (cracked).  If I bolted up a rearend from a WD45 gas, would the gearing be a whole lot faster, or slower?  Would I really know the difference?  I realize that the serial number would be lost.  Thanks!

the gearing would be higher on the gas rear meaning you would go faster in each gear if you put the gas rear in the diesel, the d230 turned more rpms than the gas to get the same hp,

Thank you, Dustin.  Has anyone done this?  Would it be too fast?

I also have a bare housing and ring gear assy's  if you decide to put back original. Serial no on housing has a 45D serial no.

Hey Mack, how much difference is there.  I hear around here from all the WD pullers that they are looking for a diesel rear end because its slower/lower.  I always wondered how much slower

The WD-45 gas ran 1400 rpm and the diesel ran 1625 rpm so the gearing makes up the differance to get the speeds the same. The crown and pinion in D-17's are the same as the WD-45 diesels so should be easy to find.

Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

 Approximately 15 % difference....1400 rpm x 100% divided by 1650 rpm = 84.8 %

I can't imagine for everyday use you would ever be able to tell the difference except maybe in first or second gear.
