I recently picked up a distributor to replace my magneto on my 1949 Allis Chalmers B tractor. Is there a difference in the governor between the one for the magneto and the one for the distributor? Is there anything else that I should be aware of when switching from the magneto to the distributor?

You will have a lot of trouble hand cranking the tractor.  The beauty of a (HOT!) mag is the impulse retards the timing slightly and then trips making crank starting easy.

I will eventually be mounting a hydraulic pump off the front of the engine to run live hydraulics for a front end loader that plan on adding. So hand cranking will be not be an option.

So does the distributor have the spark retarded to TDC. They both have a mechanical advance of 30 degrees for this tractor.

Joose, I have done just that here's proof. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Steve, that looks like a real nice set up that you have there. I would like to know how you connected the pump to the front of the engine. I haven't quite figured that part out yet. Did you use a rag joint? I already have the loader and the hydraulic switches. I just have to do some minor fabricating in order to get them to bolt up.

Joose, I used a lovejoy coupling. I don't know what a rag joint is. I machined the crank pulley to accept a coupling for a 3/4" shaft. The pump mount incorporates a larger tube in which the lovejoy resides.
If you're interested in specifics and pics PM me and we won't have to bother the rest of the world with our blather.
I have a "next generation" improvement that involves machining the crank pulley to become part of the Lovejoy coupling like this.

Joose, didn't get a pm from you so I decided to post a shot of the pump mount.
the large black pipe is sort of an extension of the pump mount ( the alu. plate mounted to the rad. mount) the lovejoy coupling is inside the short section of black pipe because there's not enough room in the rad. mount.

Joose;

  I've done the same thing to my 1948 B, mag to distributor swap, I swapped out the complete govenor, weights, gear, and distributor...Biggest thing is the nipple on top of the govenor needs to accept 2 oil lines, one from the head to the govenor, and then the other to the distributor housing.
