When you say you "turn the key and it does nothing," do you mean it doesn't crank the engine either???  If it's not cranking, it could be a bad or discharged battery or corroded connections at the battery.  Let us know what happens when you try jumping it.

If it is cranking, then do you have spark at the plug??

Just about anybody should be able to figure out whats wrong here "even this dummy"/
1. Charge battery and clean connections.
2. If nothing happens check battery with a tester. "If bad get a new battery"
3. If still nothing check wires and switches.
4. By now you should have it turning over. If it dosen't start smell the exaust "do you smell gas?"
5. If you don't smell gas then clean the carb and or check that you are getting gas to the carb. If you do smell gas then check for spark.
6. If no spark then check points.

Do the above and report back and tell us whats happening.

Its usually one of the neutral start switchs not working.  There is one on the PTO lever inside the frame-hard to get at, then there is one one the hydro lever behind the battery. unplug them one at a time and use a jumper wire to short across to eliminate them.  Ive used a test lite to see which one is bad also.  Good luck
