I hate to get people thinking in this direction but we're bearing down on the end of November so snow will be here before we know it.
With that said I have a 3point blower I have been using behind the D17 and it works like it should but I goofed up when I bought it. I bought it at auction years ago and got it for a song and dance knowing full well it was only 5 foot. My thought at the time was I can clear some snow and then pull up and clear some more so I have a good open space to work in. a starting point if you will (hope you understand what I'm saying)
But after last years blizzard my plan didn't work out too well. I need a minimum of 6 ft to blow it away from the rear tires.

My question is how big can I go with the D17 III?? how does a person know the proper way to match up a blower with horsepower? It's easy to do if you buy a new one because they usually can tell you at the dealer or it's printed in litterature but I'm not looking for new, too much ?????? any thoughts would be appreciated.    Dennis.  As an afterthought I will probably have a blower up for sale very reasonable soon! if anybody thinks they might be interested. It works very well but keep in mind it's only 5ft.

Try a "farmer fix". Get some plate iron and weld up a wider bite to the opening.

36" blower made to 45" on my B212.

Used 1/4" plastic, with 1/4"x1" flat stock brackets bolted to the blower.

I have a 6'6' IH blower on my WD45. 6' blowers take 40 to 60 HP generaly. 7' blowers are 70 to 100 hp. 8' need 100+. you can run less power in lighter snow. the problem is the wieght goes up drasticly when you get over 6'. my 6'6" blower wieghs 1100 lbs. the front of the wd45 is so light I can't steer when going foward without using the brakes.

I have a 8.5' double auger snowblower but if the snow is deep rarely take a full width cut. With a D-17 and a 7' to 8' with blower, vary the width that you are blowing to match the snow depth, the speed that you are backing up, and the power you have.

When I had the 6 1/2' blower on my IH 460 unless the snow was light and not a large amount I always took 1/2 to 2/3 of the blower width. On first pass cutting the full 6' I had to use the clutch to inch my way through. Once i had a opening then one could cut as much as one could handle. In deep packed snow It did not work good (Hanson Blower) and it was faster to use the HD5G to bust it up and push it out of the way.
Now with pickup it's not a problem and it's warm in the cab.

That's just what I was thinking when I read the post. As long as the wing sticks out past the tire, I would think it would work fine.
I've always thought I should have a blower but the homemade blade on the freeman will bust through just about anything I've had in my driveway the last 10 years. I suppose since I said that, we'll have 8 foot drifts this year. :(

Not many snow blowers for tractors in southern Kansas.
Does anyone have any plans on how to build a snow blower?

We have an 8 1/2 ft lucknow two auger blower. When we put it on a 7630 it handled 5-6 ft drifts with ease.
When we put it on the 6080 we just had to go slower.  D17 would probably run it, you just have to work the hand clutch.
If you put 6" cheaters  on each side of your blower you will probably get along fine. But Its nice to be able to clear the driveway in one swipe.

Sorry for the scale on the pictures, as I just cant figure out how to post them correctly yet.
Anyway, the 2 pictures are of my WD blowing DEEP snow after a blizzard. 6' wide single stage(old) Badger snow blower. I worked great in deep snow. I used it for more than 15 years. Bought it used way back then. This fall I traded it in for  Barfoot 6', 2 stage blower. Barfoot is basically a Lucknow. Bought it used. I think the 2 stage will work much better in less snow. 4" to 8" and wet stuff. I wouldnt even use the single stage in it because it would plug up. The picture showing the blower is on my D-17. I replaced the WD a couple years ago with that. I will get pictures of the Barfoot working when we get some snow.

I have a Farmhannd 6' two stage brhind my D17 and have yet to have any snow it won't move. two seasons ago, I had it behind my D14 and it worked OK, altho I had to use the hand clutch in the heavy drifts and banks. I don't see why a good running D17 couldn't handle a 7' two stage blower, especially since you have the power director. Now....only if they made a reasonably priced front mount setup for the Allis D14/D17.

I just wanted to sneak this post back in so I could just say 'THANK YOU!' for the thoughts, ideas, pictures etc.
I don't know why but it just never even entered my mind to just simply add a couple wings to take a slightly larger bite. What a fantastic idea!
With the above said and for that very reason I think I will hang on to that blower. It works good I just wanted a wider one, but now I have been steered in a different and less expensive direction thanks to the good members of this forum.

I also want to apologize because I have received several pm's from members who were interested in the blower that I mentioned I would probably have for sale. When I posted that I truely thought I would most likely have it for sale. I just don't want good people here to think I was pulling their leg, it's just that I think now I can make it work the way I want it too........... I am very sorry, I hope you all understand and I am sincerely thankful for the pm's and the interest you showed.          Dennis.

I have a dual auger two stage 7 foot Lorenz on my D17.  According to Lorenz, this blower should not be used on a tractor of more than 40hp.  It works fine on the D17, with the exception that you must have the feet all the way down or the driveline angle gets too steep and you shear the shear bolts in the drive shaft.  So you end up leaving an inch or two on the ground.  I'm thinking of extending the cutting edge to help make up for that.
Weight doesn't seem to be an issue, I think this blower weighs less than 700 lbs.
Adding hungry boards to increase your width is a pretty good idea.  As a rule you need to be a bit wider than your rear tires so when you take a corner you still have some bare ground under your inside wheel.  Exactly how much wider somewhat depends on how far your blower extends out from yer tractor, how sharp you what to be be able to turn, etc.
cheers,
Creek

Having the rear tires set wider than the fronts helps a bit in the turning action... because the 'outside' front wheel doesn't get out of the cleared path so easily.
