Your trans is a 4 forward 1 reverse gear box. There was originally a decal on the fuel tank that showed the shift pattern. My D17 also has the pattern cast into the cover next to the lever. Most tractors the hand clutch is called a Power Director, like a T/A on a Farmall. Back is low range, middle is neutral giving a continuous PTO, and forward is high. There are some shuttle units out there where the Power Director changes the direction of travel, but they are few and far between.
