I've got a 1954 WD 45 that needs some hydraulic help. The problems is that sometimes It can't lift the auger, but it will once in a while. Oil isn't leaking out from anywhere, so I gather that a pump rebuild will solve this issue. 

I've never worked on hydraulics before, so please correct my misconceptions. 

I've read a bit about how to rebuild the pump on this beast. I also have a paper manual for this tractor that details the hydraulic pump. It looks doable for me.  It looks like I tear it down, replace the o-rings, then try it out. If it still isn't good, I can adjust pressure with some shims, but I need a way to measure the pressure so I don't blow up my rams with the wrong shim thickness.  I don't have the manual in front of me, so I am not quite sure what part gets the shim, however. Is it the "body" in the pump or the "adjusting screw" on the position hold valve seen here?

Can I use a standard o-ring, or does it need to be made of a special material?

Does anyone how I can put a pressure gauge on the system? Where would I connect such a gauge? At the rams or is there an auxiliary port that I might use? Where would I get such a gauge? Does it make sense that to even do this?

Since I couldn't find anything on youtube, I'm thinking of making a video of my progress.
Any tips or experience would be much appreciated.

Just hook the gauge to the remote outlet.

Should use 4-5000 psi guage as rated is 3750.Liquid filled is a plus too. Connect to remote outlet under seat.Somewhere I read how much one shim should raise pressure but found it not applical on my pump.It took several more.

Don't worry about blowing up your rams. I had a poorly machine replacement relief spool on my 45 and I blew up a 5000psi gauge before it bypassed. It actually bypassed at over 9,000psi. If you put the same relief spool back in and use the same shims, you will be very close to the proper pressure. I would be more worried about blowing up the traction boost gauge cause that's what happened to me.

 Is the "unloader valve" another name for the hold positioning valve or part of the old positioning valve assembly or am I simply not seeing it in the manual? I'm going to get the manual back out tonight.

Does the relief spool or the unloader valve get the shims? Are these 2 names for the same part?

I'm outside of Jackson. I could make it out to Charlotte one of these days.

I think that I don't have a remote hooked up.
Here's a picture of the top of the unit . Is that elbow with the plug in it the remote outlet?

The remote is the elbow with the plug.
You don't have the rear outlet.  The lines on you system to to the 2 point lift, works with snapcoupler or pint hitch.
The remote operated after the main lift is up, kind of a delay.

Well if remote is connected at lift cly,you'll end with the same result-sorta. Normally that supply line is the front left port on hold valve (where that galvanized elbow is).It's a steel line that runs accross the torque tube,around the battery then back underneath it right behind the hand clutch cover then bends around the sterring column post and back to a triangle plate(mounted off differential cover bolts)which has nipple welded in it to which with the proper fittings connect the line.

I'm leaving for Florida sometime after the 1 st. of December, and the pressure gauge is going with me, because I'm adding it to my hydraulic jack so I can check the tongue weight on my trailer.
