Sounds like us when we bought a 1020 head for ours a few years ago, but its 17.5 ft, we also bought a hydraulic valve just never plumbed it in yet that will allow you to use the switch for the auger swing out as a switch to slide the reel in and out.

i had to change hyd ends on the head, to fit the combines ends. finally got 3 of them to work right, will hafta change it all back when i return the head. the 1440 handled that 20 ft head very well! took 8-30 rows. well until that gearbox spattered! but i don't think the head size had anything to do with that!
