I have a 175 that needs a new fan belt. I purchased the tractor new in January 1981 and replaced a water pump and fan belt about 15 years ago. I really don't want to go through all that pain again of removing the sheet metal to get at the bolts that fasten the hydraulic pump drive shaft to the front crankcase pulley. What about a segmented V belt? Any one have experience with replacing a standard V belt with a segmented one... it sure would be a lot easier. Stuff like this makes you wonder where the AC engineer's head was when they allowed things like this... maybe they knew the end was near... thanks

You should be able to get the air cleaner out and then access the front pump chain coupler from there. I did it the hard way the first time I had to fix the pump drive, then figured it out the second time I had to fix the pump drive.....

Thanks for the tip. I did it the way you suggested.... through the front..removing the air filter assembly and hydraulic pump access panel. Took me about 3 hrs to do the job. Had to remove the alternator to get my hands in far enough to pull the belt over the fan blades. I didn't cut the old one as I wanted to understand how I was going to install the new one, during the removal process. I was rather lucky as the chain coupling had stopped with the "pin" at the top. My 175 has spent it's off hours in the shed since I purchased it new, so removing all those bolts/nuts was somewhat easy. I can just imaging the added work involved if the old girl spent her down time outside. Thanks again....

I made the mistake of stuffing a bag in the air tube because I wanted to use compressed air to blow out the radiator when I had it apart and not get any dirt in it...I then had to bump the starter to get to two of the bolts on the front crank pulley. You guessed it, I forgot about the bag and it got sucked down the tube...fortunately I was able to retrieve it with a twisted wire......

A number of years ago, I mounted door/window screening on the inside of the 175 grill. This modification has kept the big chunks, mud and chaff from coming in contact with the radiator and eliminates much of the radiator plugging that is somewhat common on ACs. I also did the same on my 6080. Why the AC grill screens are not as fine as on the John Deere tractors....., or have some secondary screening... I guess I'll never know.
