How do you charge these batteries? I rebuilt the engine on my D14 and installed an 8 volt battery to get it running, but it wouldn't charge. I did some checking of the charging system today and found that the generator wasn't charging no matter what I did. So I changed the genny, but the new one would only charge if I grounded the feild terminal. So I installed a new regulator, but no difference. I removed the 8 volt battery and installed a 6 volt and it charged right away. Is this the nature of the beast? I have no problem running a 6 volt since I have some time on the engine and I had the starter out on Monday and cleaned all of the ground connections. The 6 volt spins it fine. Bob |

Probably better to stay with the 6. My G has an 8 volt in it and I just went through and rewired it and cleaned the innards of the genny up. It won't charge unless the battery is low and you pull the light switch out. I read somewhere just recently, that the cutout only pulls in when the generator output is higher than the battery voltage. So now I know, I'll never by an 8 volt battery. | 8 volt battery's where made so 4 of them would make 32 volts for the 32 volt system, thats what they should be used for !!! |

For what local farm dealers want for an 8 volt battery..I converted BOTH my D-14s to 12 volt alternators ! Now they always start,run, charge AND are compatible with all the trucks and other things around here.Makes it easy to boost something if needed.
And you can add one of those cheap 12v ATV winches to boot !
Either go back to 6V( get new,proper battery cables !) or switch to 12 volt,8 V just ain't 'right' !

DELCO farm electrical system . using a windmill to charge batteries for use on rural systems without REA service.

You need to adjust the regulator up to about 10 volts, otherwise it won't charge the 8 volt battery. |

| Thanks guys. I appreciate all of your answers. I don't have any problems starting with a 6 volt battery since the engine is broken in. I was only using the 8 volt, 1, because it was given to me, 2, being a fresh rebuild I need the extra power to crank the engine. I have been charging it with a battery charger between usages. Bob |

You can use an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system. It was done often back in the days of 6 volt systems. You do have to tweak your voltage regulator a little to get it to charge as others suggested. An old mechanic told me that if a 6 volt system is maintained well, there is no need for an 8 volt battery. He said that there is a few exceptions on hard starting engines where they are necessary but other than that to stay away from them. If you plan on using the 8 volt battery let me know and I can get you instructions on adjusting your voltage regulator. Ben

Ben's old time mechanic is correct. As long as the 6V system and its components are in great shape, there is no need for an 8V Battery. 8V Batteries are used as an alternative to repairing the 6V system in most cases.... Steve@B&B |

I have an 8 volt in my G, haven't any probs with it at all - it is 2 years old now. I don't run it in the winter at all, summer just use it for sickle mowing (hopefully next year some cultivating). I stumbled on to an 8 volt charger I picked up pretty cheap. I just throw the charger on once in Jan or Feb to keep it topped up, then once more in the spring, generator seems to charge the battery okay when I am using it - I always try to run it for at least 30 minutes whenever I start it up.
