I am going to build a V8 D17 puller this winter. Has anyone retained the PD with a higher hp application. It will be a mild big block Chev. I was also thinking of putting in a 3 speed auto and eliminating the PD. Trying to figure out if I want a long wheelbase with the auto trans configureation. There is a guy that pulls with us that has a Chev 350/ Allison auto out of a school bus in a 300 Farmall, and a 6 cyl
Ford mated to the torque tube on another 300 Farmall. The long tractor looks cool, but takes up precious space on the trailer.

Putting a D-19 PD that has one more disc in high and low range will help a lot. I did that in my 175 with a turbo in it. DrAllis is right, do not make too many rpms.

At 3000 rpms you may loose both legs. Could also loose 2 of something else.   MACK

So what comes apart in the PD? Do the shims fly out or the keys on the little pins come off? Or housing split open?

The PD is made of cast iron. The cast iron spinning around at Hi RPMs Will come apart(exploid). I would not want to turn one over 2800 at the most.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Have saw 190s explode when guys thought they could pull start them.   MACK
