I was at our local show last weekend and decided to pull my WD, I hadn't planned on it and I've never done it before so I wasn't really ready but it was alot of fun and now I want to do it again. Can anybody give me any tips?
I was in the 4000 lb class and weighed in at 3700 so some extra weight will be the first thing as I lost traction. I made it 158 ft and didn't come in last but I want more!
Any pointers would be appreciated.

You have to know what the rules are, seems like each pull has it`s own set of rules.

Set your drawbar as high and short as allowed. Let air out of you tires so they flatten out a bit and contact more dirt, ? maybe 6-7 lbs.

If you're going to pull regularly build yourself an adjustable drawbar. Alot of places are 20 inch hitch height but like mine isnt adjustable so I have to change it around for this weekend because the rules at the gas steam and rust show is 18 inch. As CTucker said lower your tire pressure and don't beat on it. Just wind up and ease into it and pull away.

Ine big mistake i see people making is running in to high of a gear, and getting into the throttle to early and spinning out. 1st gear is going to be your best bet. Yes, I know it's slow, but it gives the tires time to bite. also, leave the snap coupler arms in the "down" position. Don't hit he throttle to fast, bet don't let it pull in idle either. 1st gear, 1/8-1/4 throttle to start out, probably won't need any more than 1/2 throttle

used to pull against a Farmall Super H or M that had a sugar cane rear end, had a creeper gear in it, he'd put'er in low gear and walk right out of the arena/barn

As for the gearing situtation, if you have enough power to run in 2nd gear I would. I pull my WD-45 is 2nd almost always, to get the engine to lug a little, and it will gain all kinds of traction. I am not saying I am an expert puller, but I can usually put the WD-45 in first place. As for a rear weight bracket I made one to fit on the lift arms and it seems to work good as it sets the weights back a little making them more effective than being farther ahead on the tractor. On hard pulling tracks I will run 1, maybe 2 weights on the front. I pull 4500, and 5000 with it. Its also got 2 sets of wheel weights on the rear.

Those all sound like good tips, I will try them next time. I pulled in first gear because I was told there was a speed limit but nobody seemed to know what it was. I guess I'll have to find out all the rules.
Thanks,
Pete

its tricky, but you need to set it per the rules at where you are pulling, take plenty of notes, and just keep experimenting!!! adjust weights and air pressures are your main things to play with. Each time you go to the track, it will be different.

I found the rules and it doesn't look like you can do much except add some weight, and tune it up the best you can. Bolt on weights only, max draw bar height 17", min length 22" from center of axle, everything original or stock replacement . I guess it's just for fun anyway, I just like to do the best I can at what ever I do and try to put the Orange up front.
