Hi folks, first time on this site. Was recommended to this place by 2 co-worker/friends. They said there was a lot of knowledgeable people with experience here. From what I've read so far they were correct. A little bit about me, I'm 46, married to the same great woman for 27 years, spent 4 years in th Army, then 6 in the Air force, Thought about going into the Marrines at the age of 38, then wised up, just to old. Been working here at Lucky Lumber for 15 years now as the Ops Manager/Computer guy/Salesman/Jack of all trades... Anyhow I need a bit of help. I recently purchased an AC Motor Grader on Craigslist and it has a few problems. Good old working grader when I bought it, but seemed to be lacking power. Changed all the fuel filters, oil & filter, ect. and no help. Ok, needed to be done anyway, no telling when it was last done. Then she would run for a bit and quit, like someone would shut off the fuel. I put up with it for a couple days, then when I was trying to straighten up my driveway a bit, she quit and would not start again. Checked the fuel, filters, lines, had fuel to the injector pump, but when I cracked a injector line fitting and cranked it over, no fuel. So, the injector pump is out. Pulled the little timing cover off the side and it was full of coffee ground looking stuff. Talked to a local mechanic, told him what transpired and he said most likely the governor ring inside the injector pump disintegrated and plugged up the fuel return journal. That's why I could wait a minute and restart it. He said to figure on a rebuild of the pump at minimum. HERE is where I got myself into trouble. I pulled the pump off. Didn't set the timing first... yeah, rookie move on my part. Took the pump to be rebuilt at Baillie Injection Service at Nixa, MO Should get it back next mon or tues. In the mean time I need to find out how to set the timing on this machine so I can get it back together. I hope one of you can help me out with this. Thanks. I might or might not be right on this, but isn't the drive on the end of the pump a slot drive, kinda like a screwdriver going into a screw? If so, you have a 50/50 chance of gettin it right! If not, its back to basics, get the motor up on no 1 TDC, and have your fuel pump guy set the pump for # 1, if you marked the lines, and he didn't clean the marks off, that is. If you didn't mark, you may still be able to figure it out by pulling line # 1, and getting the pump to the point where # 1 is just getting ready to squirt, then pull the pump, and re set to #1tdc, then re install the pump. Kinda makes a couple of punch marks on the pump, as you are removing it, look easy. Oh, and welcome to the site, I'm sure someone will chime in, if I am wrong seriously, on this!

Dont sound you have a detroit. what kind of engine do you have? Have two of them one gas powered and one diesel. One is a "D" model and the other is a BD3 . Good luck with them and dont be bashful about asking for help CC

Just an update, got the pump back, $690 later, figured out HOW to set the timing, which btw is no small task. First, there are no timing marks on the end of the motor where one would expect to find them. You know, in the common sense area such as on the harmonic balancer/pulley/flywheel. Nope. They are on the flywheel INSIDE the bellhousing. Oh and did I mention the inspection plate you have to remove to look inside to see these marks is UNDER the cab? In fact right against the bottom of the fuel tank? Let's see, uhh, loosen half the bolts holding the cab and jack it up to get a half inch of clearance so I can remove one bolt, and loosen the other, then take out the bottom two and swing plate to on side, just so I can use a mirror to look into this hole with a flashlight to try and see timing marks on a flywheel that is coated with black gunk and oil... Hmm, seems like someone should have thought this through before putting this thing together on the drawing board. LOL, well believe it or not, that is exactly what I had to do. I looked everywhere on the internet for the timing settings, could not find squat, so settled on 16 degrees before top dead center. I did remember to line up my timing marks on the pump when I installed it once the motor was on the mark, but I had no idea if the engine was on the compression stroke or exhaust, soooo... You guessed it, I got to do it TWICE, ya!!! The good news is, once I did it the second time, it did start and run, I reset it to TDC on the compression stroke I fired up my generator, plugged in my dremel and VIOLA! I now have timing mark that can be used on the OTHER END of the engine! So just in case, if there is a next time, I don't have to go through this mess again. (shudder) gives me nightmares...
One small glitch here thou... anyone know the PROPER timing for this motor? AC Diesel - 10000 series, in line six. I wouldn't worry about it, but, she is kind of hard to start since I got it back together. I think the timing is off a few degrees. Thanks.

Budro, If its the old energy cell engine, don't expect it to fire up like a direct injected engine... and don't try drowning them in ether either...As small a dose as possible that will start them... maybe your engine is a million miles and tired too... so lower on compression? Non of us get better with age after a certain point.

I have it narrowed down to the injection pump as I do not have any output on the high pressure side. I was just wandering who he used as i have priced it around for my M100 and its around 1500.00 to rebuild it. The 700.00 he spoke of sounded like a much better deal. If any of you guys have someone you prefer send me the contact info and I will give them a call. Thanks!
