I firmly believe that any modern oil is better than the non-detergent oils that were recommened in the 1940's and 50's.

I use shell Rotella 15-40 in the engine and hytrans in the transmission/ hydrualic resevoir. In the final drives I use the heaviest gearoil I can find.

I use 10W30 in the gas engines, 15-40 in the diesels, universal trans-dralic in the transmission , hydralics, hand clutch and rear end, and a fluid gear grease in the axle gear boxes like was used in the grease banks on old corn pickers.  If you have problems with the trans-dralic leaking because of lower viscosity, you can go to the 80-90 gear lube in the transmission and rear end.  I'd stick with the trans-dralic in the hand clutch, keeps the tractor from wanting to "creep" in colder weather.

Using straight 30w is fine when temps are warm.
It is a very poor choice of oil in cold winter temps.
Allis Chalmers even recommended not using it in cold weather.

Shell also recommends to use a different grade of their oil {10w-30 or 5w-40} rather than some of their 15w-40 for better oil flow in cold weather starts.
Shell has may different grades of oil that have good cold weather flow.

Oops Edit:

Using straight 30w is fine when temps are warm.

Shell also recommends to use a different grade of their oil {10w-30 or 5w-40 or 10w-40} rather than some of their 15w-40 for better oil flow in cold weather starts and for less strain on the starter and battery.
Shell has MANY different grades of oil that have good cold weather flow.

Allis Chalmers has an oil/temp chart showing when to use 10w, 20w and 30w.
Since 10w-30 is now available that pretty much covers it.

This is from Shell regarding 15w-40 in cold weather.

The best product would be Rotella T6 5w-40 Synthetic.   Better cold
flow and still a 40 weight at operating temperature.

Best Regards,

Shell Technical

I am forced to reluctantly agree with what is said above.  Yes, the oils of today are much better than the oils I used - even though the ones I used worked great.
Only one suggestion.  If the engine has not been overhauled recently use a non-detergent oil in the engine.  A detergent oil may clean the engine and cause oil burning quicker than you may want.
Good Luck!

Then run non-detergent oil until you clean it.
NAPA has it.
