Got some time and "re"started working on WC replacement manifold, I asked several question before and now got some more. ALL of my stud hold DONT BOTTOM OUT, earlier I learned from you guys that only one went into water passage and I kinda figgured the rest would bottom out, well the tap went in almost the whole way on all of them!!! So after I ran the tap and cleaned the holes I installed ALL the studs with Permatex and stopped. Any ideas on why my head would be different or an I confused???

Also a question on the gaskets why does the manifold side have gasket material but the head side is just metal to metal??? Am I missing something? how does that seal???

I don't understand what your question is on the manifold studs. The studs should bottom out in the threads. A regular tap has a lead in for cutting so the stud won't go in as far as the tap unless you use a bottoming tap. Bottoming out would not necessarily mean stud contact with the bottom of the hole, only tightened till you run out of threads.

ok... someone responded to a prior question that one stub went into the water area and the rest didnt, he suggested antiseize on them and permatex on the one that went intot he water area. it appears all of my go into water areas and i was confuzed so i put permatex on all of them. my next question is what seals the exhaust manifld the little gaskets go against the manifold and then the metal rings but what seals the metal rings against the head? do i need to get some kind sealer here other than permatex?

Nothing goes on the manifold gasket. If your head is flat and the manifold is flat, the gaskets seal fine when torqued up. If things aren't flat, you'll be taking it apart and buying new gaskets before long and then have to mill both surfaces to make them flat.

My favorite thread compound for bolts protruding into water jackets, is ordinary teflon pipe paste. I don't think it'd be really happy on an exhaust stud (conducting exhaust-heat down the bolt core to the teflon), but it does an excellent job of keeping water pump and thermostat/neck stuff from leaking, slipping out, or rusting permanently together.
