Dad just called said the pto quit on my 7040 while brushogging this afternoon,havent had a chance too look at it yet but he says the whole hub comes out when he tried too unhook sounds like something broke inside....any ideas??

On the inside of the tractor there is are two hollow shafts, one runs inside the other, one is for 540 one is for1000.  On the end of the inside shaft which I think is 540 the is a nut that retains the bearings and shaft, if that nut came off then the shaft could slide out, a lot of oil will run out if the shaft slides.    There is an access plate on the bottom of the rear main housing for access to the pto gears, take that plate off and look inside.  Good luck

Some people don't know that the shaft is reversable, but I don't want to insult your inteligence, I just don't know what you know.
 
What I think is the problem is the bolts all came out, otherwise as skip said, the whole rear end would have drained the oil when the shaft came out.
 
When pulling the stub shaft, it can look like the hub is coming with it, but that is only the flange that bolts to the hub if you will.
