Would anyone have photos of an installed tank-type engine heater on a WD? I'm having trouble finding a spot where the heater will be protected, out of the way and somewhat sturdily mounted. Any help is appreciated! Ken

for most protection, the heating unit would have to be under the fuel tank, but the plumbing would get complicated. some models might tuck along side the frame rail. If you have a loader, the loader frame may offer some protection. karl f

unless the unit has a built in pump it needs to have the inlet low enough to allow coolant from block drain to gravity flow into bottom inlet of heater, as small ball check prevents the coolant heated by the unit from backing out as it is heated. discharge of the heated liquid then exits the top and flows into the upper end of engine.
On many auto and truck uses the in block frost plug heaters work best, then the lower radiator hose heater is next , the tank heater would be last choice. On larger trucks they had a heater with a small pump built in to circulate the coolant as it was heated. expensive but work great. ------------- Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? | Tank types work like percolators, check valve in then check valve out, turn it on the water gets hot and forces the out valve open, as it leaves it begins to cool and the lower pressure pulls the out valve closed the in valve goes open, nice smooth transition flow. These have been used on heavy trucks for many years but the frost plug variety became low expense popular. |

Here is a couple of pics of the one on my WD and also of another type on my WF. Bottom connection is from the block drain. Top connection is through a fitting tapped into the upper water manifold back of the thermostat.

| No, the heater in the top photo is right side up. It is one I had laying around and is actually for a much larger engine. |
