Anyone rivet new linings on their brake bands? I have a D19 that needs new linings or new bands. AGCO wants $200 for each band or band half, not sure which. The $200 price made the question moot. Reline kits online are about $20-$30. Is doing the relining work very difficult or require special tools?

Check with truck shops around your area , many have a rivet press they use or did use and now have tucked into corner as bonded lining are now the norm.

Local shop let me use theirs and i did it myself, last set of HD5 linings i did I used brass bolts to secure linings, (brake lining bolts)

Also check with small automotive specialty shops that do brake jobs, as many of them may have the press also. In fact many of them might have a supply or supplier for the lining material also.

While a rivet press would be the ideal way to do it, I relined the brakes on my WD by putting a punch in a vise to use as an anvil, the upset the rivets with a hammer and another punch.

Whatever way you do it, make sure the brake lining is tight against the band.

I have done lots of them without the special tool.

A good punch will split the opening of the rivet, then I have a rounded bolt that I use to tighten them up. Then I give it a good what with a ball-pein hammer on the open side, and a bolt holding the closed end. Make them really tight. Doesn't take long at all.

I have riveted pads on several times. I put a punch in the vise that fits the head of the rivet, then I start with a punch ground to a point on a 45 degree angle to open the hollow end up and finish with a flat punch. If you have solid rives, it's nice to have a concave end on the to get it started but is not necessary. Work around the top to get a head on it and make sure the lining is tight against the shoe.

Something like this makes the job go real smooth. Clamp it in a vise, drop the rivet in place, line it up and whack it with a hammer. Next rivet!

I got one from the Matco tool truck for about 40$.

Interesting this topic came up today, as I ordered linings for a B from OK tractor this past Thursday, they arrived today, and after work today I installed linings on shoes and shoes in tractor in about 2 hours. I used the punch and hammer method in the vice, by the way this was the first brake relining for me. I had the shoes already out and cleaned up and the housings cleaned of all the mouse habitat. Did our D17 IV years ago with relined brakes. Used a good punch. Tractor still stops!! Take your time and you can too.

I got the pads riveted to the brake bands. Wasn't that hard. Hardest part was getting the brake bands out. The adjusting bolt didn't want to let go. I was getting worried the bolt would snap off but after a bunch of penetrating fluid if finally let go and came out. Thanks for the tips.
