All I know is it was started under the guiding hand of Nan Jones. Can't remember now if it started just after the first GOTO of if the first GOTO was actually started due to inputs on OAN. HTH ------------- When you find yourself in a hole,PUT DOWN THE SHOVEL!!! |

Nan Jones, the founding editor and publisher had written an article in a farming/tractor magazine titled " Mothers Get Hooked on Antique Tractors". It was read by a couple of Allis enthusiasts, Norm Meinert and the late Richard Schleichter. Both Norm and Richard had been working with the Allis Chalmers Corp. displaying their oldest AC models at fairs and shows. They met up with Nan Jones and her son Allan and convinced her to start a newsletter for AC enthusiasts. Her first effort was a single page, printed both sides which was sent to 50 known AC collectors. This was in 1983 but somehow the newsletter got dated 1982 and from here it has grown.
The stories in OAN don't say whether the newsletter came before or after the first GOTO which was held at Freeport, Illinois. 40 AC units were on display and came mostly from Norm and Richard's collections. If I have missed out the names of any other OAN founders, I apologise. |

When I first subscribed to OAN 20 years ago, I bought all the past issues so now have the complete library. OAN sure has come a long way and continues to get better. ------------- Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed |

You're quite right, Bob. The story was partially covered by an article in the Spring 2011 OAN on Norm Meinert. The article states that OAN's beginnings started after the 1st GOTO at Freeport in 1983. I also have all copies of OAN. Just wished there was an index to all the copies. |

Norm Meinert may answer as well to this question. Old Allis News was
decided upon in January of 1982 at the Meinert's kitchen table with Norm and Donna, the late Richard and Nancy Sleichter, Alan Jones and Nan Jones. The first issue came out in the Spring(3 issues that year). The first show was held at Freeport,IL that summer. The events did not get called "Gathering of the Orange" until 1988. I was asked if I would do a newsletter for the A-C collectors; never realizing how much a part of my life it would become. A great 25 years. Nan |

I just got back from Rantoul where i plowed with the 6-12
in 1982 i ment Rich and Nancy Sleichter at a show in Freeport Il. and latter that day we got talking to Nan and Allen Jones. when we found out that Nan had owned a newspaper
we thought she was the right person with the knowage to do a AC newsletter, but no commitment. it was Jan. of 1983 that Nan & Allan, Nancy & Rich, Donna & I had a meeting at our dinning room table that Nan commitmented to do the newsletter.
Rich & I with the help of many others put the first complete show of tractors from 10-18 to the wd-45 d. we invited each tractor owner to get the complete lineup for the July 1983 in Freeport. i think the first newsletter came out in the spring of 1983 and was only 1 page. WE ALL OWE NAN & DAVE A VERY BIG THANK YOU FOR WHAT WE HAVE TODAY!

I will second that Norm. From very humble beginnings it has grown to a fantastic informational magazine. Now, maybe we can start working on Dave and Heidi to make it a bi-monthly with thoughts of making it a monthly magazine.
