I'd like to get a 15' bat wing mower (bush hog) for my 180. I'm leaning towards a 15', but they also have a 12'. The 12' is not as heavy. I have 65 PTO hp.
Thanks,
CT

Depends on what your mowing and such. Normal stuff your fine. We use one on our JD5310 4wd for normal mowing! But Could sure use some more hp at times in stuff hood high!

It will handle it just fine, adjust your ground speed according to conditions.

WOW. What kind of deserts do you guys cut 15ft with 60-80 horse. I used a Case 1270 on a Woods 3180 for a few summers in old CRP leaving it at 6 inches high for wildlife easement. Many hours spent crawling in 2nd or 3rd gear.
I spent many March's in East Texas by Texarkana and Mt. Pleasant. From what I remember of them guys around there that bushhogged, they did get by with some pretty small tractors on 10 ft mowers. Lots of Fords and Masseys.

Let me know what you decide to go with...I was considering moving to a 15 ft. from a 10ft and can't decide on the brand. Prices all about the same for the same size cutter, but we have only had Bush Hog Brand and have had real good luck with our 6ft, which gets really abused, and real bad luck with our 10 ft. which gets babied.

I would nt even try a 180 a 15ft. I can kill a 150 hp tractor with my 15ft. The 180 would handle it fine on the road or if your backing it into a shed, other then that, nothing.
If you have any fescue, dont even think about it.

John - I'm with you - I can lug my 180 with a heavy 7 foot mounted brush hog in head-high weeds. I'd say a 10 foot pull type would be the most I'd ever put on a 180. Mike

Head high weeds isn't normal mowing around here! And I said hood high heavy grass is different story! And we have to go slower!!!!!!!!!! Having wings makes it great to mow along edge of our creeks, banks and ditches easier and safer! And look at all the state tractors with the 15' mowers on them. Around here, there all in that size 60-80 hp. range and most are 2wd.

I can confirm what Mike says. I pull a 10' single-wing (woods brand) with my 180-- that's all it wants and a little more than it wants in dense fescue unless you cut with the deck way up. Any more than 10' would be problematic, at least for my mowing conditions.
The 10' pull-type single-wing replaced a semi-mounted 10' rigid brush hog. The batwing does a significantly better job mowing unless you're mowing pool-table flat ground, plus it has the advantage of being able to mow up against ditch banks and so forth.

i work for ohio department of transportation in knox county we use jd 5520 which according to the book is 95 pto hp to pull a batwing now we use one with the RIGHT wing only which makes them 10' and in high grass we mow in a 1 or 2 1.5 to 2.5mph and light we can mow in b 1 or 2 3 to 4 mph in licking county the use case ih of the same size and pull the same thing we have also the have 1 full bat wing but do not let the grass get as high or slip the clutch in 1st to have enough power i personally have a single wing and love it pull ours with a 4020 all day long so if you get a 15' you can take a wing off and buy the cover for the spiltter and the side of the mower that is what ours is and still have the flex of 15' but pulling a 10' ( we put the wing back on to mow corn stalks sometimes i have left it on and unhooked the pto shaft to the box just be careful that way they throw stuff out the side easy)

I have been looking online at Woods, Rhino, Bush Hog, Alamo and Modern Ag. I have a Rhino 6' currently and the 180 plays with it. Rhino makes a TS series 12' for "smaller tractors" and they claim 35 min hp. Designed for 35-50 pto hp tractors...
I like Rhino and Modern Ag. Modern Ag is in Beaumont, TX which is only 3 hours away. I originality was looking at the 10' "one-wing" offsets. But after reading 50 hp min for 15' mowers I wanted to ask around first. Bush Hog and Land Pride are options too. I would not be mowing anything taller than 2' with a flex wing on the 180. I will use my 6' for bad areas.
Thanks,
CT

Owners of the 10' offset wing mowers, which side do you prefer the wing on. The left or the right. Why do you choose?

I currently have a 3008 Bush Hog 8' 3pt mower for the severe stuff, the 180 I have handles it well except for the weight on 3pt, added my loader for ballast among other reasons. I have pulled a 15' batwing with it as the neighbors 90hp New Holland was in the shop, pulled it OK but had to stay in 2nd low side for it to work the grass not the tractor, also had to keep it fairly high during cut.
Grass was over 2' high, mostly weeded out and thick, it had chains instead of the mulching shields my Bush Hog has so it cleared the deck of cuttings relatively quickly but it worked the old machine pretty hard. I probably won't be looking to buy my own unless I get a 190D or a 200D to pull it.

Nsula, I dont have a bat wing so I really dont have a dog in this hunt but I would think that a right side would be better so you are closer to your levers on the right of the seat. I know while i am working my box blade on hillsides, I have a tendancy to look over my shoulder uphill so it is not as comfortable to grab the levers while turned left as it is when looking over my right shoulder. That being said, I know the 3pt and hydro levers wont be used as much while mowing as opposed to blading.

I'd choose right side due to roads and being accustomed to other equipment offset to the right.

I use a 225hp cat rubber track tractor on my 15ft bat wing bush hog. If slip clutches are tight it will kill tractor serveral times in a day, mowing tall grass and brush, if your not real careful. Maybe to mow front yard ,if not tall, a 180 would work!

Borrow someone's 15' and see if it works for YOU! As that's all that matters!
Everyone's conditions and such are different! And normal mowing out west must be different then ours. Heck you can stall any hp tractor on them or slip clutches on them small or large! And sure we can't mow as fast as a higher hp tractor. But we're getting our fields mowed faster than when we used Woods 208 8' 2 spindle bushog! And we can trim close to creeks and things, So for us it works fine and we have less hp then 180 has! Our cutter is a 15' Land Pride 30 series one of their 1st 15' models. And it has been a good cutter! No gear box problems like old woods! Brother in-law just got a new 20' JD with air bag- cushioned rear axles with air planes tires. Sweet Cutter! I not telling what their pulling it with most of the time ) Its Less HP then you guys think is needed. When we mow again I'll get a few pictures!

We used to run our B320s (20ft light duty batwings) for pasture mowing with 180s on our farm. For pasture mowing, you should be fine with a 15 footer, esp and older one. The new ones are quite a bit heavier and spin faster, so they are a little harder on a tractor than the old ones.

My father has a 15' bat wing Bush Hog. He has pulled it with a 6600 Ford with ease in similar terrain. The 6600 is about 68-72 pto hp. He recently bought a JD 6420 (90 pto hp) and he says he can drive what ever speed he can stay in the seat.
We have similar terrain and grasses. We are 60 miles apart... I figure I will ask him when the next time he plans to mow pastures let me know. I will bring my 180 down and hook up. If it makes it a day I will find a 15' used. If not I will look for a 10' offset wing (RH) or a 12' bat wing. Rhino and Land Pride are the only two I know of that has made a 12' for smaller tractors. Downside is they are new models. The going rate is 9000 - 11000 for them. I'd rather give 4000 - 5000 for a 15' unit. Thanks, CT

It would work if you only use half of the cutting width. No way it will mow 15 feet of anything that needs mowed. If it has already been mowed or is a dessert it will work fine. Bill

At work we have a fairly heavy 15 foot Land Pride that's about 15 years old and pull it with a John Deere 4430 that's at full health. Heavy, tall grass will make the old gal grunt pretty good. Dad had a heavy 10 foot Rhino that he pulled with a John Deere 2955 (85 hp), and heavy, tall grass would make her lug too. If you need to be back home by a certain time and you're mowing in any mass of vegetation, I wouldn't want to pull a 15 footer with less than 100 hp, and 120 hp or more would keep things moving along a lot better.

I have a 12 foot Schulte flex wing cutter, it can and will lay my 6275 right on it's knees, the 175 WILL NOT handle it at all in grass of any size. In heavy running for a 180 sized tractor, I would lean toward a 10 foot machine as maximum practical size HERE.

We pull a 15' batwing with a 7060 or 8050, I might put the 200 on it for light work such as reasonably short grass I would think a 180 would be too small unless you're mowing a large lawn.

I looked up those tractors. a 7060=161 hp, 8050=152 hp, 200=106 hp. I believe the 200 is suited to mowing, but the other 2? What are you mowing down, trees??? The highway crews around here can mow 3-4' high grass on steep hills with a <100 hp, 4wd tractor.
My father bought his Ford 6600 from a road maintenance contractor when he upgraded his fleet years ago. The 6600 is rated (Nebraska Test) at 70.5 PTO HP. From new till dad bought it all that 6600 did was pull a 15' bat wing. Conditions unknown.
I know that I have all my land under control. I will mow 2-4 times a year (pastures w/o livestock). From what I can tell the 180 is rated (Nebraska Test) at 64.01 PTO HP. Seems pretty close to the 6600 (-6.5 HP). Maybe Ford HP is stronger than Allis-Chalmers HP? Kidding.
I have been thinking of using 190XT parts to turbocharge the 180. Should bring it up to around 90 PTO HP.
Thanks,
CT
