Subject: Model c front pedestal

Does anyone have an exploded view of a Model C dual front pedestal. Wondering about removal of the steering shaft so I can put new bushings in. My CA book doesn't show the right one and my C manual doesn't talk about removal of that shaft. Thanks

If you are talking about the center shaft that the axle is welded to then all you do is remove the four bolts that hold it to the front casting after jacking up the tractor. You remove the top gear and lift the pedestal up off the shaft and axle.

I'm talking about the shaft going out the side. The one in your picture is the newer style(where the shaft and arm are one unit) which it shows in my CA book. On my early C the arm is held on with a nut but not the gear so I'm not sure how the gear comes off the shaft.

They can be a chore. The nut comes off and the gear does not slide off easy. If the shaft turns hard to begin with it comes out harder yet. You can get a long punch in the center of shaft with the nut loose and pound some. You can pound on the lever some and twist the shaft with the lever asy you do both. Oil on the shaft helps also. I never figured out how to pull the gear without driving the shaft out of the gear. I had one that I was about ready to drill a hole on the casting so I could use the hydraulic press when it finally moved.

That shaft has a nut on the end holding the gear on and mine is flush with the gear so I'm not sure how the gear is held onto the shaft. I was thinking that I have to drop the vertical shaft out and then drive the horizontal shaft in and there might be a set screw or something holding the gear on.

I just looked at you picture better and see that there is no nut. I have not had one like that apart. I have one out back from a CA in the weeds but will not get to it for some time.
Yes you do have to drop/remove the pedestal first. No pins just the nut holds the gear inplace. I use a 3/4" socket with a breaker bar and beat on the breaker bar with a hammer.
Here is another one I had apart which may give a better view of the tapered shaft and key.
As you can see I get things broke down where I can turn things every which way.

That's still not the same as mine, there is no nut on the end where the gear is, only on the end holding the arm on which yours doesn't have. That's why I'm confused.

That would just mean that the shaft would have to be moved in after the nut and arm has been removed. At that point you would be able to see if it is pinned. I would guess that it is because the shaft would most likely be to long to come out the top or bottom.
Your in unplowed ground as far as I am concerned. You'll just have to bull ahead.

My parts book is showing an bolt and loking nut coming into the side of the gear to lock it in place. looks like it faces front. Earlier model with the short steering arm, prior to C109. Bob

That's probably it, mine has the short arm and serial C30.

Here is what the shaft looks like on mine. Just like Bobs book shows, I had to drive it in and remove the bolt and the gear and then pull it out. Now I have to go find some bushings and seals.

Thanks for the pictures. I have not taken the time to see If I have one like it. I have the short arm on my narrow front B but didn't think it had a nut on the out side.
I have a couple more narrow fronts up at the farm and a wide front out back in the weeds. I do not remember ever seeing a nut on any of them.

Maybe yours is yet a 3rd kind if it's a short arm with no nut.
