Is there ant tricks to the governer on my 1953 wd? It seams to only go half throttle. When i bought the tractor the po had a piece of bailing twine tied to the carb for more throttle. I adjusted the linkage so the lever will only go 3/4 way and still no changes. There is some slack between the 2 rods on the governer before you can feel the spring. Hope there is a simple adjustment.

I did not see any replies to your governor question. Did you figure out what the problem was? I have the same issue but I have not attempted any adjustments yet. |

You can change the spring in the governor, but there is no adjustment. I use a spring I found at tractor supply on my farm stock puller, It will turn 2300 if your unloaded. I don't recommend doing this very long. |

I put a spring for a 170 in my WD and it works great.Gives it allot of pep.A little tough to change out though.I used a large pair of 90 angle needle nose pliers. ------------- I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder. |

Thanks again to Terry & Tripp for the advice about the governor spring. I have not purchased a manual yet but soon will. Can you also tell me what the recommened safe RPM range is for a 51' WD?

Governed loaded speed is 1400. I think you can change it to 1600 or 1700 by changing out governor springs with a D17. |

Such low RPMS it would be nice to have a permanent mounted tach.
Currently just using my ears I would say that is probably about where it is now.
I will barrow a tach from work and check it this weekend to be sure.

I had a non-responsive governor on my WD. After doing some checking on my parts tractor, I discovered that the rod the governor weights pivot on was worn and bent.
Once I put the governor from the parts tractor on it, the first time I got on to move it with the throttle at the normal position and not trying to hotrod it, I pulled the front end about two feet off the ground.
This tractor has been in the family since Grandpa bought it new in the spring of '51. He bought two of them one for Dad (10 years old) and one for him. When they quit farming in 1965, my other Grandpa bought it and used it as his only tractor on 80 acres.
It may have been overhauled with a 45 crank installed sometime around 1960, I don't know for sure, and didn't think to measure the stroke when I had the head off. Grandpa always claimed it had a 45 kit in it and Dad never contradicted him, so who knows.
One of these days I will have to find out for sure, because it really needs an overhaul now.

Sounds like you have a very special tractor.
I don't have a parts tractor but if I need a governor are they easy to come by?
How hard are they to install?
All of they tractors I grew up around are long gone.
My buddy and I just recently purchased this one just for a hobbie & something to play with. It was very cheap only $500 and it starts easy & runs ok but we are not sure if the RPM's are right or not. It came with a two bottom plow & we tried it out last Sunday. It did seem to struggle a little but the ground is very hard we have had no rain for a long time now.

I would take off the front cover and have a look inside, sounds like you might have broken weights or pins or something siezed up inside.

A few other gentlemen have mentioned the D-17 spring & 2300 RPM. My big question is what's safe?
How many RPM's can these little engines handle?
My engine has the new style orange paint different color from the rest of the tractor.
I think it has very few hours on a possible overhaul but did set for several years with out being ran after the man that owned it was killed.
It has great oil pressure starts & idles very quickly & smoothly.
I just don't want to throw a rod or anything like that.

| 2300 would be the unloaded rpm not the loaded rpm. I see people do it all the time......I wouldn't just let it set there unloaded idling at 2300 rpm for any length of time though. |

| I put the 1800 rpm spring from AGCO in my WD45. it had a 1400 and was very unresponsive. I inspected the rest of the govener when it was apart and nothing eles was worn. after installing the spring they are listed as 1400, 1600, and 1800 in the parts book. I had to adjust the govener stop down to keep it under 2000 no load. really made a differance in the tractor. before it would bog down to 1100 before going back up to 1400 and you could not get any figher. now it holds 14-1500 at 3/4 throttle. steady. made a world of differance with a snow blower. |

This is one tractor that I will never sell. It is taking it easy now, just brushhogging my 10 acres once a year, plowing the garden and occaisionally blading snow off the driveway.
I don't know where you are in Kansas, but Austin's salvage probably has a truckload of them. I have no idea what one would cost.
I think it took all of about 20 or 30 minutes to replace mine. I replaced the whole assembly from the block to the distributor (also from the parts tractor).
Maybe buy cheap tach at O'Reilly's to check your RPMs?
I am waiting for a lot more rain before I even attempt to plow my garden with my 3-14 plow.

Be prepared when buying a spring....they arent cheap. Sandy Lake Implement has fixed me up with them a few times and usually stock them and will ship them.

I don't know all that I need to know about rpms and setting the linkage. My friend who was an AC mechanic for 30-40 years said that when you have the slack out of them, the throttle rod should be just a little(maybe an 1/8 inch) past the hole in the carb with the carb at idle. Seems to work! ------------- You don't really have to be smart if you know who is! |
