| just a dumb question how does the measurement go to determine the size of your plow bottoms and does anyone know where I can find cheap moldboards for an allis chalmers 3 bottom plow? |

Measure center to center on the plow beams at right angles to the direction of travel. Some plow frames were adjustable width, some not. To find plow shares you have to identify the plow bottom. Plow bottoms are in a different parts book than plows and there were as many as a dozen different bottoms available and the whole bottom assembly of those different bottoms all fit the plow frames. That assembly consists of the frog, the moldboard, the share, sometimes a shin, and generally a landside, short or long. And for each plow bottom number, there were as many as a dozen different plow shares of different material and shaped differently for different soil and stony conditions. I have that plow bottoms book and the best way to identify a bottom is to measure that width, then find a number in some existing part, though landsides were used on multiple bottoms, shares and moldboards are mostly unique and frogs are unique to the bottom, there were even different frogs used in different times, some forged, some welded. If I'm home I can usually identify the bottom from one of those numbers and give a list of plow shares and their variations. I don't have any extra plow shares though some day I should declare my plow available. Gerald J. |

I assume your talking about width of cut per bottom? Looking down at the plow frame locate the main beams that the bottoms attach to and find a place where you can measure straight across them. You need center to center, NOT inside to inside or outside to outside. Center to center is same as edge to edge as long as you use same edge, land side or furrow side for both ends of the tape measure. There is no 1-800 number for cheap plow parts, parts plows and a few N.O.S. parts that surface are your only choices for econonical parts. |

measure as mentioned above , photo is of a set of 14" oliver plows
wear parts are usually handled by local farm suppliers, you can check with them to see if they have any A-C parts, moldboards are going to be expensive my guess between 175/210 per bottom depending on if it is nos , or aftermarket
these days it will be cheaper to buy another good used plow than to replace all the wear parts on a multi bottom plow,

On my 2 bottom plow I use with my CA, I ended up having the points built up by the local welding shop. Couldn't hardly get it to go in the ground before, now it will dig in no problem. Depends on the model of plow and bottom used like Gerald says. When Duetz bought Allis, they went to all the vendors of equipment parts, and told them to destroy all patterns, and molds for AC parts. Star manufacturing here in Freeport IL was one of the plow parts vendors, and this was told to me by a member of senior management when I inquired about Allis plow parts. ------------- Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives. |
