How do you remove the front pulley on a WC that the crank handle goes into? I freed the piece of governor weight in my timing gear and I don't know where it went or what happened to it. I need to take that cover off to get any pieces out so they don't cause future problems. I have already removed the bolt that goes in the side of the pulley, I just don't know how to get it off. The gear pullers I've tried are either too small in diameter or they are too long and won't fit between the front pedistal and the engine.

I got mine off the parts tractor by hand. It helped that the rad and shroud was gone. Maybe try some of your favorite panther pi$$ and let it soak. Of coarse that might take a while.

On a B, along with a gear puller, I have driven a pair of wedges behind the pulley. A lot of pulleys are broken by gear pullers. Use a lot of snake oil also.

Please don't try to beat it off. There have been way too many of them broken by either hitting them with a punch or by using a gear puller hooked onto the pulley flanges. Either rent from your local auto parts store or make a bearing puller. It's a flat plate that splits into two parts and can then clamp behind the pulley. They are made for removing ball bearings from shafts as it is not a good idea to pull on the outer race of a bearing when it's the inner race that is stuck. Anyways, with the pulling plate clamped in place a steering wheel or harmonic balencer puller will screw into the holes in the outside of the plate. If it does not then come off smoothly apply a small amount of heat to the pulley. It should expand and almost fall off. Two things to check for. Many of these pulleys have been loose in their long life and sometimes people put a set screw in the hole first and then another on top to keep it tight, check for that. Also sometimes when they run loose for a long time the woodruff key can begin to cut sideways on the inside of the pulley. It's damage that you cannot see until the pulley is removed so if you can get the pulley loose at all try turning it. If the key isn't aligned with the original keyway it will never come off without breaking. If I can help. 207-453-9951, ask for jim. Good luck

If it's not stuck bad, Mack's idea will work. If you have an air hammer, get in as close to the pulley hub as possible and you can work it off that way. If it's stuck and just being defiant, you're going to have to pull the front off and use what Jim Wiggin says. I've heard them called "bearing knife" "bearing spreader" "bearing separator".

I managed to get what I needed done whihout having to take it off. So that worked out nicely.

Don't worry about the key not being in line with keyway there is no key in a WC. No key until D17. I have beat ameny of them off and have yet to damage or break a pully.
