Series II with Narrow front
1: I have a leak where the steering shaft goes into the control valve. Do you need to remove the entire power steering unit to gain access to this seal? I was hoping to remove the steering shaft and coupler and get to the seal.

2: Rear PTO oil seal is leaking, I have a new seal. Do I need to drain the transmission oil and then remove the rear bearing retainer to gain access to the seal? Replacement oil suggestions? Manual just says Allis-Chalmers Special Oil

I am not sure about the front bolster "needing" to come off, but it would sure be easier with it off.  Unless everything is rusted solid, the time to take the whole front end off, would be less than all the cussing from the tight spaces up where you need to get.  Just to qualify, I have not had to perform this repair, but just from the looks of it???

As for the rear PTO seal, if you take off the rear seal plate, that is all the further you need to go, as for draining the oil, it will run out faily fast so I would.

I just read the manual, and it says the front support MUST come off, I think this is because in order to seperate the steering shaft, either the steering wheel/control column/tank/etc. must be removed, or the control valve must move forward, there is not enough play in the steering shaft to seperate it any other way that I know of, as I have had to do it twice on two seperate 17s.

Theres 3 screws if I remember correctly that hold the cover on. There is an oring that seals the cover to the valve. It won't be easy to get at with the reservoir in place.
