I have both an Allis WC and an Oliver 70 and out of bordem and curiosity I looked them up on Tractor Data and this kind of suprised me. The WC has a 201CID 4 cyl engine that produces 29.93 belt horsepower. The Oliver 70 has a 201.3CID 6 cyl engine that produces 31.52 belt horsepower. The site did not list PTO horsepower for the WC so I used belt horsepower.
So did Oliver really have to use 2 more cylinders to produce basicly the same horsepower that Allis made with only 4 cylinders??
Which one do you think would be the better tractor?? The Oliver does have an advantage in that it has foot brakes and instead of the 28" rear tires like on my WC it has 38" rears. My WC has a simple 4 speed trans that will let the tractor go 9.5mph while the Oliver has a 6 speed trans with a crazy shift pattern that lets it go almost 14mph.
I drive them both alot and love them very much. In my opinion they both are better at their own thing. In other words I like them both so much I can't put one ahead of the other.
I know with this being an Allis site more people will be in favor of the AC and it won't be very fair for the Oliver but I would still like to know how you guys thought they would stack up?? ------------- 1937 WC, 1950 CA, 1959 D14, 1967 190XT, 2006 Ram 3500 |

The 6 cylinder was a soother running engine. Having more gear choices may have been nice too but both would add to the overall cost of the tractor. | I would choose the oliver, more power/torque with the 6 cylinder, more gears, hydrolics, better seating. But I still love the wc! |

Just out of curiosity what years are the tractors? Are they styled or unstyled? IMO the 70 with the side curtains and the streamlined hood are some of the best looking tractors ever built. Styled 70   I've never run one but either a 77 or an 88 is on my wish list.

i prefer the wc for look, I don't care for the looks of the 60,70 or 80. The 66, 77 and 88 on look the best IMO ------------- red and green are nice for christmas, but orange is all year round http://www.canadianantiquetractor.com/tractorforum/ |

My Oliver 70. It was one of the last ones made. It is dusty from sitting in the barn all winter. It looks alot better cleaned up

I have driven both fairly extensively. The Oliver takes in in comfort, ride ,ease of handling, and brakes, and quietness, and maybe traction with the 38" tires. On the belt or PTO, there is no contest, the WC wins hands down even with less horsepower. The quick governor and faster PTO make it better on the PTO and belt. And I thought the 70's had a four speed transmission???------------- Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives. |

The Oliver 70 was a far better tractor-------and more expensive to buy. It could be argued that the WC was a better value, but never a better overall tractor.

No need to choose-drive them both. We used AC and Oliver on our farm. I always thought they complimented each other quite well. I had no qualms about having to drive a "good" green machine instead of an orange one. ------------- "My name is Lionel and I'm an Allisoholic" |

| The WC is a fine collector piece and I do enjoy looking at them. But I must say, I have made them work from day light to dark and this is just my personel opinion, they would make a great large boat anchor. Not trying to make anyone mad. I love ac, but they had to be the most difficult tractor to drive ac ever made. Bill |

Dad had an 1945 Allis WF and a Chochutt 70. Dad used the 70 to operate a semi mounted 1 wheel IH mower - I recall he ran it in 4th gear and there were 6 speeds ahead and 2 speeds in reverse.
The 70 was a standard wide front and was a nice warm tractor to ride on while the WF
was more open. Dad ran the Allcrop 60 and the roto baler with the WF. i like the wc for the looks and the sound of them.... wc's are great tractors. the only down side is the hand brakes.. but i have never drove or operated an oliver.. i dont really like the style of the 70"s. ------------- wd with a freeman model 90 trip loader, wd45, 38 unstylled wc, b 10 garden tractor and 2-14 ac trip plow. grandpa has a 56 wd45. wd. allis chalmers snap coupler blade and 3 bottom snap coupler plow |

Did the Oliver 70 always have a six speed trans, I seem to remember the one I drove was a four speed. I'm so confused! ------------- Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives. |

Not sure where the serial number break is, but the earlier Oliver 70's did have a 4 speed tranny, the later models had a 6 speed.
We had a couple Oliver 70's over the years, I ran the last one a few times, from memory I think the 70 would slightly out perform the WC, but not quite "hang with" a WD. I would take either the WC or Oliver 70 over a John Deere B.
Spent enough time in my younger years on older Deeres I still have ZERO desire to own one.
