Im looking at buying a 7580 with a worn out engine. How hard would it be to swap in a 3306 Cat or similar cat engine? Im not really a fan of the 505 cummins but that would be my second choice. I would like to get around 250hp out of it if it would be possible. I really need an 8550 but this one would be local and cheap. Would the 7580 be up to that kind of hp?

NO.....you will eventually rip the transmission gears out of it if you use it hard....the 426 engine could do that.

If I kept the 426 and put new sleeves and pistons in it what else would I need to get that kind of power and still be reliable? Bigger turbo for more fuel? Does an 8550 have different internals?

8550 is a totally different clutch and transmission....waaaaay heavier duty than a 7580.

I guess thats what I needed to know. If I can get it bought cheap enough it would make a winter project. May be money ahead to find a bigger tractor.

I can speak to you from experience; don't buy it if you are looking for a hard work horse. I've owned one for about 8 years now, and am having transmission trouble for the second time. As far as I know, it is not turned up, cause it is not overly blessed with power. It does get the jobs done I put behind it though, and I've gotten a lot of work out of it over the years, but to put more power to it to try to get it to do more would be shakin hands with danger. I do love really like the tractor though. This was to be its last year as my seeding tractor, which is its biggest job, and I was going to retire it to just being my spraying tractor, which it works awesome for. Right now with the transmission trouble, I'm not sure the road I'm going to go down with it. In summary, if you need a work horse, go for a bigger one; if you have some light chores for it where the 4 wheel drive is nice to have, go for it. Darrel

I imagine it could work, but a normal pickup truck governor would be kind of lame on a farm tractor, and it isn't going to drop in without lots of custom made parts to make it fit.

Im just looking for something with more pull power than my 7060 has. The 4wd would be a big plus but that adds alot of weight to lug around for having the same horsepower, so I figured it would have the traction but be gutless. It would have to pull our Unverferth 5 shank inline ripper, and be a backup tractor for the field cultivator. If it worked okay maybe even replace my 7060 on the harrow. I might not need all 250hp but the more power you get the faster you wanna go it seems like.

My uncle pulls a 5 shank inline ripper (Landoll without coulters) with his 7080 (195hp) and works it. I pull a 4 shank (Tye Pari-till with coulters) and can run with it on my 7060 or 7080 (both 210hp)

Right now were pulling ours with our TG285 and it has plenty of power but it doesnt have enough traction. We were trying to rip 18" deep in river bottom thats never been ripped before. Its only our first year having the ripper and they said it would pull easier after we rip it once.

7060, Im surprized it doesnt have enough traction. Im not sure how deep my uncle pulls his, but I pull mine at 18". I have a cousin that pulls a 3 shank DMI at 18" with a 4630 (with 4640 motor 180hp) and works the hell outa it. When I told him I could run 6.5mph he told me I had a sissy ripper. I just told him I have an ALLIS!!!

Heres the thing about a 7580 or any small 4wd tractor for that matter, they are over sold in terms of there ability. If you bought a 7580 with the mindset that it is really a 8050 with MFD you will be happy with it, if you are thinking in terms that it is a 250 hp Green Steiger your going to be disappointed. I say 8050 because you are lugging around alot more weight and have alot more tires to turn so when you figure that into the equation its is powered more in line with the 50 than a 70, hence the reason an 8070 MFD out worked them and the 4W220 went the way of the do-do.I have heard of the transmission problems with the 7580 and I think it was due more to the fact that the tractor was being worked like a big 4wd tractor instead of what it really is. I have a 7580 we use it to pull a CaseIH soybean special 30ft drill and a 750 bu J&M Cart and it works great in that application, but we have tried to pull some things we pull with the steiger, which to be fair is ALOT bigger and the 7580 will pull it but its pulling its guts out to do it, and if you did that on a constant basis you are going to have problems for sure, just like the 2470 -4690 did, just like the 8630-40-50 did etc. The exception is the Allis Chalmers 426 had the ability to put alot more strain on everything than did the Case 504 or the Deere 466. Those engines did not have the cojoines to pull to the bitter end. My opinion of the 7580 is it should have had the 516 in it rather than the 426 the 516 had the ability to not have to run so hard to do the work a farmer expected out of a tractor with its physical size.As far as repowering goes the 426 has the ability of 250hp and lo RPMs when you have an inline pump, my friend has a 7580 with a Cummins 505 in it for sale if you want one with a cummins already in it, but my thoughts are that if your going to repower a 7580 with a cummins the M10 or M 11 would have been a better choice.Just some food for thought.
