Well, the ergonomics between the 3 are not even close, AC by far. The IH is a horrific design as far as convenience for the operator goes and the Deere is about as uncomfortable as it gets. However, I'll never understand why AC didn't go with the throttle console control on the 170,185, 210, 220. like they had on the 190 and 200 it was so convenient for the operator. That never made any since to me. I have a 170 and a 210 and love them, but man would that be great if the throttle was on the console. Hydraulics definitely go to the AC, Engines are probably a toss up. Transmissions I Don't know about that.... the Torque Amplifier stunk as well as the shifter for the trans on the IH was a joke. The 185's pop out of 3rd and I really don't recall the deere. Overall, I would take the 185 in a secondd over the othe 2.

Our 185 has had a turbo installed along with 2 speed pto. This tractor is very versatile and would run circles around the competion.

IH gets the road speed award. Wish the 185 had independent PTO or at least a 2 stage clutch. 185 has the nicest 3 point hitch. 3020 has the most versatile drawbar. 185 wins the 2 speed shift category. 185 comes in last on tire choices in my opinion. I always liked the IH hydraulic levers better. Never liked the JD dash mount or console for that matter and the 185 levers LOOK like little weed stalks sticking up that will snap off at any time.
Some people like the JD hydraulic couplers better because you can hook them up with pressure in the hoses. Personally it did nothing for me cuz I never leave hoses pressurized and they aint Pioneer style. If your are doing a job that requires jumping on and off the tractor constantly I would pick the 3020. Being able to jam that shifter in park is way easier than setting the brakes on the 185 or 766. Personally I like the throttle position of the IH better. I am always working the throttle on it cuz it is convienient. 185 position totally sucks and the 3020 is at the wrong position on column. The 3020 was available with differential lock, the IH and AC were not. To me I have never really had a use for it but I imagine for some jobs it makes a difference. JDs 24 volt system can kiss my butt. Taking the starter off a IH will test your patience.
As far as which one is best, I guess it just depends on what job you need them to perform. By the looks of things 40 years later more people like the JD.

3020 was available with so many different transmission/control combos. What worked for one guy sucks for another. I have never operated a 185 so I will leave it out. The 3020 w syncroshift was the cats meow compared to the 766. We had a 766 for a couple of weeks and dad and I hated the shifter/hydraulic location. TA aren't so bad if you know how to operate them, if you don't then their expensive. 766 brakes suck, shifters suck, can be hard starters, ECT The 3020 with syncroshift is the perfect loader tractor in my opinion as reverse is right there in every cluster if you cut out the one gate. Starts easy without being plugged in or either. Diff lock helps thru the slop. As someone else has said the 24v system sucks but can be coverted to 12v and it's not that bad. Both the oh and Deere seat suck if any wear happens as the get loose and sloppy.
Again can't compare a 185

a 766 with a D360 hard to start my ass, mine will start at minus 10 no ether or block heater, and she has 4K hour on this engine. far as hyd I'd go JD other than couplers, for traction, ease of pedals (brake & clutch) I'd go the IH, hitches if their 3pt toss up, prefer fast hitch or snap coupler though, 2 of the best hitch designs ever made shame they didn't last. grew up and still have the 766D but have to say would love a 185 some day then maybe a 4320 (the first JD I ever drove)

Ive always heard that the JD powershifts were pretty rough shifting. The 404ci JD engines like in the 4020 were hard to start, and the 3020 engine is the same cube per cylinder just minus 2. My grandpa has always said his 4020 with a turbo and the pump turned up would outpull my 7060 if it could get a bite. We dont have the tractor anymore so I dont know.

JD was always kinda backwards on the control side of things, any of you who have ever operated a Titan combine vs an L2 of the same era will know what i mean.
I've had three (still have two) 185's, not one ever jumped out of a gear, yet i hear this is common. Reverse gears are way to fast, to run a snowblower is almost impossible, as for live PTO, use the Neutral position of the power director. and that 301 at that level of power just runs like a kitten forever.
