I have been wanting another tractor for a long time, now i am actually starting to look for one.  Dad always had allis chalmers (d17 being the largest), so i have a soft spot for the orange.   I currently have a 1066 and it has been a very good tractor to me.  Anyhow, i think i have it narrowed down to an allis 8030 or an IH 1086 or a 1486.   Just looking for opinions on the 8030.  Biggest concern is getting parts.   Tractor will be used for tillage work as well as making hay in the summer.   Thanks for any suggestions you can provide

Never been around any of the 8000 series.  Dad has a 7060 and at one time ran it side by side with a 1066. (still my favorite tractor of all time).  The 8000 series cab is a lot better than the 86 IH.  The IH also has the gears on the left side.  Ok, but takes some getting used to.  A 1486 will probably out horse an 8030, but the 1086 would be about the same.  I'm a bit of a binder guy, but the 8030 is probably the better overall machine.

FWD will be an option on the 8030, but rare on the 86 series. This would be a boon for tillage work as it will outwork a heavier tractor.

Sit in both cabs.  If you are still considering the IH afterwards you need your head examined.

If you do much tillage work and find an 8030 FWA, you'll be a very happy camper the next time you drop an implement in the ground.

I think the ac drivetrain will be better too no dry clutches or TA's the 8000 series is a step ahead, it would compete more with the 88 series IH

How reliable were the FWA's?  I have seen a few 7XXX with it.  Anything good or bad about the crank, rods, mains, supports, etc?

OWNED an  8030 fwd for 16 years puttingand 4000 hours on it. Hardly any down time. Changed a universal joint in front end . Added a grease fitting to the new joint.
Installed one set of tires and installed air seat to rplace the original suspension
which broke.  8030 is   a great tractor.

8030, looks better, is cheap hp, has a better cab. i too like the ih's, the 1486 will be to much for haying, unless using the big square balers. the 1086 is a good all around tractor! as is the 8030! if you go with the 10 or 14, make sure it has the newer updates on the tranny levers. or it'll stick in park and a forward gear, letting out the clutch....shells the rear end and tranny!

Thanks for all the replies folks.   Posted the same question on other forums and got pretty much the same answers as what everybody here is saying.   Now just need to ask the wife for the money.

You do realize the 1086 & 1486 were made before the 8030 ? The 88 series IH would have been the competition for the 8000's so it is not really an apples to apples comparison.

Rfdeere, I'd take an 8000 series over an 88 series as well. And yes, I have logged alot of hours on an 8050 AC and an IH 5288.
