now that we've moved to the country, i'm thinking of getting a bigger garden tractor or subcompact tractor. i'd like to mow about 1 1/2-2 acres worth of "yard" and also be able to take care of a garden (size yet to be determined). right now i have an18hp sovereign w/ a 48" deck and it's capable of running a tiller. it would probably suffice for all i/we need.....but like any guy, i want more toys, so i'm shopping. would a 5020 be a GOOD choice for everything? either w/ belly or 3pt finish mower. will it handle a 5' brush mower? i was thinking it might even be useful mowing around the pond since it has a lower center of gravity and a diff lock compared to using the D17. the good thing about the 5020 is the 3pt, since i already have a few implements, and they're small enough to use on the 5020, it seems it would be more useful than a bigger garden tractor....but this is all new to me, so informed opinions would be appreciated.

| The 5020 would be a great choice. The Allis belly mower is just as tuff as the Woods. I have a 5 foot 3 point rotary cutter that I used for years and it handles it just fine. You just need an over run clutch to keep the roraty cutter from pushing you into something. The 5020 really is a (big) little tractor. When I bought my 9523 Simplicity, which is the same tractor, the dealer said the tires would need loaded to get the use of the power. Weight makes all the difference in the world. That and tire chains if you have the turf tires. |

I've got a 5020 with a 56" flail mower that does a good job but it needs weight on the front end. It will pop a wheelie if you let out the clutch too fast. Lyle ------------- 5040 Bad Boy Mower |

| Unhook the third link and it won't pop wheelies. It wll turn and travel fine on the read wheel without lifting it. The only time I hook up the third link it to raise the cutter up and set it down over a bale of hay to grind it up. |

the 5020 doesn't have independent pto? or live pto? or whatever u wanna call it so that pressing the clutch disengages the pto also? so basically, it's safe to say go ahead and get it and have fun with it? seller says it smokes white at start-up and continues to smoke until it warms up. how much of an issue is this? says 1700 hours....not sure if that's actual or not.

The 5020 has a built-in PTO overrunning clutch inside the transmission, so you do not need to buy an external one. But it does not have independent or live PTO. The foot clutch stops everything.
The later ones have an extra (intermediate) speed range for twelve speeds forward, which to me would be a big plus, because on my 5030, the high range is too fast for some things, and low range is too slow. But the low gear is really slow, great for tilling and heavy mowing.
I use a 60" Bush Hog 'Squealer' on my 5030, but it is pretty much balanced on the rear wheels when I lift it. Even with turf tires, it will go through almost any conditions, really good floatation that way. Heavy brush cutting really gives it all it can do, but for regular mowing, the 5020 should be OK.

I bought a 5020 about 12 years ago and I mow 5 acres. It has a 60" belly mower and a 48" three point hitch roto-tiller. I also bought a 72" three point blade. The tractor is a work horse and I use it year round. The blade grades my driveway in the summer and cleans the snow in the winter. I also borrowed my neighbors single bottom plow to work my vegetable garden with it and it did fine as long as I mounted the tire chains on it since it has turf tires on it. The only issues with the tractor is that it tends to run hot at higher RPMs if I don't keep the radiator clean and I'm constantly cleaning the battery terminals because of a dark oily build up on them and losing contact.
