a friend let me borrow his 2 row planter to give a food plot a try this year. it's a very old deere model that uses chains to control the drop rate. well one of the links in the chain broke and the local dealer only had links that were about 1/3 bigger than what i needed. is there a place to get old/new replacement links? did everyone make links a different size? and how the heck do they come apart? the sales guy said you have to tap them out from the side....said don't go crazy w/ a big hammer, but just tap them out.

| look up chains on the internet you will find them. Look close and you will see where they slide into each other by bending the link up and lining up where they slide into each other you tap them apart. |

Shoup has a variety. www.shoupparts.com Also Baum Hydraulics. www.baumhydraulics.com Neither has a super great search engine. Best to download the catalog sections from Baum. Section S, page S7. They only sell by the 10' roll. But they give dimensions. Or call Shoup. Things are easier to find in their printed catalog. At Shoup look at chain, steel detachable, but they only show what they have, not dimensions. They also sell only by the 10' roll of chain, but both places sell attachment links though likely only the wrong sizes. There were several standard sizes of the flat chain. You may find a number on the chain links to hint at the size. Gerald J. |

I've seen implement chain at TSC but not at any Orschlen's I routinely visit - Joe you must be SPECIAL and they stock it at yours, lol! Mike

Look for "detachable chain" what you want is probably 45 or 55 chain. Our Farm and Fleet store has some on hand. There were many different sizes of detachable chain but the sizes were standardized between manufacturers. I broke my elevator chain on the Wood Brothers corn picker at our tractor show. I went in the sawmill building and picked a short piece off the wall. Herb, go to our website and get all the info. This fall is our 50th, John Deere is the feature but we are having several old tractors rounded up for our anniversary. A couple of the original club members old tractors include a Dain owned by the Sycamore club, a Reeves that was at the first show this club put on and a few others. http://www.ae-ta.com - http://www.ae-ta.com There are a lot of pictures from past shows under the photo button. There is a you tube video slideshow of the building of our post and beam barn that I put together(2009). We have 50 acres now that allows us plenty of camper, trailer and car parking in the front 10 acres. We have a display and demonstration area with sawmill, corn elevator, crib and sheller all set up and working. Out behind the threshing machine is the stationary baler and best of all we have soybean harvested with old combines, corn picked and corn shelled with vintage equipment and lots of plowing too. There is always more going on than a guy can keep up with. thanks guys.
my neighbor said to try tsc, so next time in town i'll see what they have. i have an old oliver drill too that has some chains....maybe i'll get lucky and they'll be the same size. of course if they are, i won't be able to get it apart w/out breaking it.....but that's how things go, right?

That chain comes apart pretty easy if you have a good hammer and something to back up the bottom.
