I have found out the old BIG AL engines had a counterweighted crank ;thats the one that broke ; then AC put out a new version in about   1975  ; anyone know the differences ? I believe I could have one made for $4500 ; also anyone know if the BIG AL version is different than the engine for scrapers and crawlers ?

the cranks broke off at the front snout do to prolonged tortional vibrations.allis tried to correct this by drilling the crank to accept a long dampner bolt to keep the nose of the crank in compression.then they induction hardened the nose, then they went to a 6 counter weight crank(instead of 12) to lighten the rotating mass, finally they went to a snub nose as used in the 6138.all the above improvements have differant part #s.note: cummins also had this problem (335)and went to the snub nose.
