I thought I read on here that one could put a WD-45 crank and sleeve/piston set into a WD engine.  If this is possible, is there anything else required.  Thanks!

Not really.  It would be benificial to use the WD45 head, carb, and air cleaner.  Head is probably a wash, but the carb/air cleaner were bigger on the WD45.Thats what I've done to my WD.  45 crank, head, carb, air cleaner on a 4" AGCO overhaul kit.  Someone else will have to chime in about the manifold.  I know the aftermarket ones are for a WD-D17, but I'm not sure how one would compaire to an original WD for carb flow.

Put a `45 crank, 4 1/8 sleeves and pistons in a `48 WD block.  Used the original head, air cleaner and carb.  Had all the rotating assemblies balanced.  It dyno`s at 45 HP.   You can`t tell externally that anything is different until you plow with it at half throttle.

Better put a 45/D17 carb and manifold on if you want best results.Dad put M&W's (for a WD)in the WD in 62 and was sadly dissapointed with the upgrade untill he installed a 45 manifold and carb.It would work right with any stock 45 after that and is still running today.

Is there enough "rotating" clearance on a WD-WC block for the 4.5" crank? I thought that is why the Dash 40 block was so sought after is because it was wider to accept the larger crankshaft from the WD45?

It will fit but what is a Dash 40 block.

the dash 40 block was the last version of the Wd motors with the side plate. if you read the AM number on the right side it will end with a
-40. From what I have learned they are sought after by the pullers because they have a larger bottom end for the larger rotating assembly that the wd45 crank requires? I know they physically look larger (wider)where they meet the bellhousing.

Learned something new again. The crank will still fit in any 201 block as far as I know. They might be after that particular block because a stroked crank will fit without as much grinding. That's my thoughts. I have put in and taken out 45 cranks in WD and WC blocks before and never paid any attention to the block casting number.

There is a little more room for a bigger than 4 1/2" crank, but the main reason is the -40 block is stronger above the center main saddle. All older blocks are open in that area and the -40 is all cast iron. In short, a stock stroke WD45 crank will fit with no issues in all WC-WD blocks.
