Know where their is a 3 cyl detroit with blower, that I think could be bought. Out of a crane, runs excellent. So complete power plant. Is it factory in anything (dozer)? Thanks Gary IN

A HD7 early style used the 3-71, as well as Pettybone in their 1 1/2 yd loaders in early 50's. is around 75 HP and a unit that was used to repower many other older gas engine machines. seen pictures on here of farm use tractors repowered HD5 units also (source other member on here)

Have looked at several HD-5 conversions to the 3-71. Owners have told me they make an HD-5 a real pulling tractor. There are a number of them in the Red River Valley in ND and MN and have seen a few go at auction in Canada.

A 3-71 must have more than 75hp as my 3-53 in my 230 Timberjack has 78, according to the service manual. The 71 series have more power than the 53 in everything I have ever run (of course they are also a larger displacement).

2-71 in a HD5 according to engine plate is 48 HP least in the early units , they use HV7 injectors

Friend of mine put a 3-53 in a chevy pickup years ago. It was great for mileage but it just lacked a little get up and go at higher speeds. Said if he was going to do it again he would put a turbo on it.
You coluld tell who it was without any doubt when he came down the road too!

As I have that extra 2-71 setting out back I keep thinking it needs to go into something. Idea was a WC would be a great conversion but need to get the WC first.
Also thought of that in small pickup. but at 50 HP would lack a lot, might be like the 6.2 in 85 Chev PU

Shameless, 71 series have been done, one guy has a turbo 4-71 silver in his 3+3 chevy C30. It took a lot of work. Lift the body, lower motor/tranny, lift the suspension/new custom rocker covers and oil pan all because the engine is just to damn tall. Also he used an aluminum military block and it was still heavy as hell. Stick to a 4-53 if you are going to do a pickup. Still better have 4wd or you will get stuck on wet grass and winter roads would be a death trap.
