I'm looking at a late square frame'D' Special grader with all the options including range transmission and power steering but no cab ordiesel.
It was purchased at auction and the buyer later discovered that it was only driving on one side. The axle is broken and the seller removed the drive chains. Is there spider gears and a differential or does the rear end have a spool and positive drive to both sides all the time? I don't want to get into welded spider gears. It is in nice condition. What is it worth?

Calvin, I have the parts book for the round tube D grader and they do not have differential gears. There is a short axle for each side splined to fit into the bevel gear carrier so there is no differential action. The four drive wheels are locked together and I guess that is why they can push quite a bit for such a small machine. The end of the axle has just a key to drive the chain sprocket and it is possible that the key may just have sheared off. It sounds like it is a great machine with lots of good options on it. I am a little out of touch on the prices so I don't know what to suggest. Finding parts can also be a little challenging so I would factor that into the price.

There is a "D" grader here for sale local. There is also a spare drive assy for it laying next to it. I can purchase this if it will help for parts.

Chris. I haven't bought this grader. Lots of other projects but a grader with all the goodies like this one is rare. What are they asking for the grader and will they sell the spare drive seperatly? $$
