I have hd6e that starts easy and seems to run well accept for the white smoke and a lot of oil blowing out of exhaust. I have changed all filters and oil ,removed air filter,checked oilcooler . There is signs of oil in radiator but no water in oil. I'm having a bad feeling about this dozer being a parts machine. How far into the engine do I have to go to find out what's wrong? Thanks for any guidance.

Oil in water is usually an oil cooler problem.White smoke and oily exhaust shouldn't be related to oil cooler problem.The dozer guys will have a better answer.

White smoke generally means that you are burning coolant. The raw oil in the exhust is telling me that there is alot of blow by from the rings.

So head gasket, pull head and fix, rings pull engine. I guess better get started, the only heater out there goes down about 5:30. Thanks guys!

does it have a turbo? i do not think the hd6 did but if it does, look at the turbo seals first. any bubbles in the coolant when it is running? bubbles mean a head gasket leaking compression into the coolant. oil in the rad can only come from higher pressure oil system going into lower pressure coolant, ie oil cooler leaking. is it an allis engine or buda? using oil is one thing but blowing it out of the exhaust is obviously too much. you can put rings in it with the engine in the dozer but if you have anyplace warmer than outside, that is the place to do it with winter coming. how does the wife feel about you working in the kitchen?

It might just be slobbering. The cylinders get glazed from running at little to no load for a long period of time. If it's running ok besides the oil slobbering (not overheating) I'd go out and work it hard for 3-4 hours (make sure you get it good and hot, but not overheat) and see what happens. Don't forget to check the oil level depending on how much it uses so you don't run it too low.

Working it hard can break the glaze off the cylinders and cure the slobbering. The white smoke could be a bad injector or low compression due to the glazed cylinders.

That's just what I would do if it were my machine.
