I have a 38' B and I have no history of the oil type previously used. Since it has a filter, I would assume it's best to use a detergent oil and do a few low hour filter changes. I use PennGrade 30wt High Zinc engine oil in my vintage car engines and I'm planning on using the same in the tractor. Anyone use a high zinc engine oil?

Originally, they recommended 30 weight non-detergent oil for summer months and 10 weight non-detergent for the winter. That as the industry standard for the days before multi-viscosity oil. I use 10W-30 in all the old engines, especially after a rebuild when all the sludge has been cleaned out.

The "experts" on here do recommend a high zinc oil.

As stated before, 4 cycle lawn mower motor oil as in Kohler and Kawasaki or the old diesel motor oil, Delno or Rotella (not the latest diesel emission oil) has the selenium, copper and zinc additives. Automotive oils designed for engines with roller lifters, for pollution purposes, do not use these additives (they could but cam wear is not an issue so the automotive industry had them taken out so as to impress the environmentalists. So unless your B has had a roller cam installed :-) .... 10W30 ish
