Working here in the shop cleaning and straightening up from the last several projects that made it through since harvest and moving one of my first vehicles I ever owned and wondered to the group on here what was your first vehicle. My first vehicle was a red 64 Impala SS 327 automatic power glide. Had to put it to pasture due to the frame and body rotting away making it far to expensive for a teenager to repair don’t know where it finally ended up then came the metallic blue 77 Riviera that I drove to prom, graduation, 2 years of community college then parked till 99 when it was the getaway car for our wedding and still have it today along with an 83 green and silver 3/4ton 4x4 Chevy that I restored in 2000. I just thought perhaps we needed a new topic on here cause everyone remembers the good times in their first vehicle. What can warm a guys heart more in this cold weather than reminiscing about vehicles of the past.

1969 Chevelle in 1980. It stated out as a 6 cylinder power glide without power steering. It now has a 327, turbo 350 and power steering. It's sitting in the garage waiting for a summer cruise. It needs the gas gauge fixed and I would like to upgrade it to front dic brakes. It has more motor then brakes but that's what I learned to drive and always had enough room to stop. If it could talk it has a few stories. Maybe it's my guardian angel it got me this far.

Mine was an 86 vw golf with the 5 speed. I think the Canadian version was 91 hp. One thing about an underpowered vehicle is you actually learn to drive when racing your buddies around. It's truly a miracle that I'm still alive.

My first was a 1961 Ford Fairlane 6 cylinder "three on the tree".
My first new car was a 1974 Mustang II (four cylinder - four speed). I didn't put any money down (Dad cosigned) and my payment was $110 per month for three years. I was thinking about that car payment Thursday when I filled my pickup with diesel fuel. The fill-up was $173 and I was still over 100 miles to empty when I filled up. From $110 car payment to $173 refuel in 52 years!

68 Volkswagen bug. Had to wire the heater open. Heater worked like crap until it didn't and melted my sneakers. First car my brothers and i ever had to drive was a 76 mg b convertible. Little brother still has it. He has a masters in engineering and needs it to keep that car going. Case ih had an advertisement with a jackass trying to pass a liquid manure spreader and the driver got what he deserved. That's my brother and the car

There were additional heaters offered that did burn gasoline. I think I still have one. The originals used heat exchanger exhaust manifolds blowing air over the engine exhaust manifolds and into the passenger compartment. The shields or ducting was tin and rusted away quickly. The gasoline heaters would run you out they could be so hot.

If we only knew then.... A friend had a 68 Impala SS with 427. Pulled the engine in the 70s due to gas prices. Both are long gone. I knew another guy, friend of my dad. Rebuilt wrecked cars. He had Laguna S3 for sale. I liked it but didn't buy it. Told him they'd be worth a lot more in the future. Looked at me like I was crazy

Parents let me drive a couple vehicles to school and around for sports and friends and such. Most frequently a 1975 Chrysler New Yorker, occasionally a 1970 Binder pickup. Both pieces of crap in their own way but I appreciated having wheels. First vehicle I bought was a1980 Ford F150, 300 six. Also kind of a piece of crap!!!

I don't think I have ever heard anyone that had a F-150 with the 300 cubic inch six call it a piece of crap. I had a '77 that had a ton of miles on it when I got it. I ran it for several years and gave it to one of my uncles who drove it for several years. Never one minute of trouble with that truck.

Found the NOS Stewart-Warner gasoline fueled heater for use on cars at the shop, but it's not for a VW. Installed several of those on Beetles, and Squarebacks, (Types 1, and 3) when they were popular as a temporary wrench at the VW dealer during high school. The rocker panels were the heat ducts and rotted before the shields over the manifolds did. The gasoline fired heaters didn't rely on the manifolds at all for heat and usually had ducts cut into the floorpan between the rear seat passengers' legs. They got hot too......

My firsts, bought at the same time, were a 1951 Meteor (Canadian Ford) Tudor and a 1941 Ford pickup that I got for 20 bucks!. It was an ex military version as it was a floor shift model. Civilian versions had the column shift. I soon sold the Meteor as the girls seemed to like the truck, and it was more fun! I had a second one the same a few years later, which is still around the area as a Hot Rod show truck.
I guess you can guess our ages by what our first vehicles were!!

It would certainly be nice if they still offered such a basic truck.

My first car was a 1959 Ford full size car. 332 V8, 3 on the tree. I put a Holley 4bbl on it and changed the shifter to a Hurst on the floor 3-speed shifter. Was a 4 dr car!! Paid $400 for the car, shifter was $49.95!!!! Lol. Car was 10 years old when I got it. Was repaired at local wrecking yard where I worked. Back end had been smashed so they put a new back half on. Cut and welded between seats. You could see the bronze weld all across when lifted the rubber mat. They did lots of them this way. We had a guy there that would assemble one in two days and send to paint booth! Those were good days then! I got it in 1969!

On graduating high school my dad bought brand new Ford Courier, that was mine to drive going to college 40 miles away. I don't know if he even drove it a dozen times. In 78 near college graduation I found 75 Chev C10 with less than 20,000 mile. Has a 350 with 4 speed, Heavy 1/2 ton so no cat. The owner had built a new house and hauled building materials. Once house was built he wanted better gas mileage. It is still here, has not run in 30 years. It has about 175,000 hard ranch miles, lots of dings but no rust.

My first car was a 1960 Ford Falcon. 3 on the tree. Drove it for 2 years and decided I wanted something different. Asked my Dad about it and he said if I would wait, he would get me a new Ford Maverick for my Senior year. I said no, I really wanted one now. One day my Mom called the farm and said the owner of Ben-Hur Ford in Sioux Falls, SD was bringing a car down to look at. I drove into town and turned the corner to our house and a 1966 Ford Mustang was sitting there. I said to myself that's the car I'm getting. Dad paid $1000 dollars for it after trading in the Falcon. Paid him off later and I still have it. It goes to my Grandson when I'm not here anymore. rrhead(SD)

Very interesting topic,,,,,!!!! My first car was a 1952 Chevy 4 door that I bought with money from working at the local Chevy dealer after school and Saturdays. Good old 235 and 3 speed which soon after became quite a screamer with a "Split Manifold" of my making and side lake pipes,,,,glass packed "Smitties" sure did sound good,,,,!!! Installed a Duel carb manifold I believe was a Fenton brand. Put a lot of miles on tjat car and was still in good condition when I moved up to a 1955 Chevy 2 door post. The 55 got a built 327 with the "Optional Z28 solid lifter camshaft" and 12 to 1 Jahns pistons,,, (which I still have) and them Great sounding solid lifters!! That was one high winding engine,,,,,!!!! That 55 was followed by a 55 2 door HDTP that got a 406 with a very rare set of aluminum heads of Jenkins design with canted valves and an Pro Ram Tunnel Ram with two 600 Holley carbs. Still have that monster in my garage back home,,,,,,,, Like everyone else,,,,wisht I had em all back.....

Yes, the old split manifold. I never had one but had friends who did. What a sweet sound, on a good night, you could hear them coming or going a mile way. Not the fastest, but some would give the Fords a good run. Some of the Plymouth guys even did it on the flathead 6.

Yeah,,them Chevy split manifolds sure did sound great....!! The only'ist ones better sounding were a SBC with dual glass packs going all the way back to bumper. When I was ready to start up my current 55,,I bought 3 different sets of "glass packs" looking for that mellow sound of old times and did not find what I was looking for in that mellow sound,,,,??
