Inspect for timing gear damage. Fix whatever is broken.

....and I remember MACK saying a nicked or slightly distorted timing gear tooth will cause bad harmonics and lead to another failure....sounds reasonable. Don't cut a corner?

Thanks Dr Allis and Steve M
Probably just buy a new governor and be done with it.

Oh but wait....you have to inspect the cam and crank gear for damage also!

Haven't got it off yet, but I hope for minimal damage. Only ran engine a few minutes. Thanks

Have the gov off. Ears? on the weights have been hitting the inside of the housing. Guess something is missing or broken ? I'll try to get some pics posted. Thanks

For the record, a D-15 does not have a spring connected to the carburetor linkage. None. Just another old wives tale.

Thanks Dr Allis. Any thoughts on what happened to my governor? My plan is to replace it and also the larger bushing. Not sure how to pull the small one. Thanks again everyone!

Probably a bad plan when you have zero tooling to do so. I've OH'd 5 or 6 of those in the last 50 years and never replaced either bushing.  The failure ?? 60 or 70 years of no one replacing the weights with new ones I'd imagine. Same old story with the 201/226 being far worse.

Thanks again Dr Allis. There's a lot of play at that larger bushing and it looks easy enough to replace.A new governor should outlast me easy enough.

Now I see the weights have a inside ear? that keeps it from hitting the inside of the housing. One of mine is missing. Wonder where it is? Bottom of the oil pan would be good . Thanks

Have center in window with #1 on the compression stroke. If I bar the engine over so the crank gear turns 2 full revolutions will it be in the same place? Thanks

Posted By: steve(ill)
Date Posted: 05 Dec 2025 at 4:36pm
YES... every 2 revolutions you get on the COMPRESSION stroke... and you should see TDC #1.

Turned engine, have it back up on #1 with center in the window. Crank gear looks good
No sign of the governor weight piece. May drain the oil and see if it's in the pan. Thanks

If it's not visible in or around gear train i wouldn't worry about it. It can do no harm in the pan. Likely hood that it ever makes it to drain hole is slim too. It's not magnetic so fishing for it not happening.

New governor is here. My book says the thrust bearing face goes to the front (radiator) . Is that the bearing end? Old one fell off before I could mark it . New governor has the bearing end to the back. Thanks

Brg end to the front

Thanks Alvin! Makes sense that the bearing end goes to the forks in the front.

I'm about done with this job and have another question. Book says at 1750 rpm F 25 should be in the window. Last time I had engine WOT with F 25 up. Which is correct? Think rpm is about 2200 wide open .Thanks

Posted By: DrAllis
Date Posted: 11 Dec 2025 at 8:07am
The distributer advance is fully advanced at 1750 RPM if everything in the 60 year old distributer is working correctly. If you do the wide-open-throttle setting it is no different than 1750 and no mistakes are made. You might think you are at 1750, but maybe your tachometer isn't quite accurate. Full throttle is the only way to do it on ANY A-C gas engine.

Double checking myself and the distributor clamp doesn't look quite right. Anyone know how it goes? Hope to have pictures up soon. This is the clamp on the horizontal piece between the distributor and the governor. Thanks

rotate the foot part UP... so it sets on the distributor flange and the forms an "L" bracket , similar to my photo..... my photo looks cast, yours is sheet metal, but they should do the same thing.

not a real good photo, but the EAR goes on top and points back at the distrib.

the clamp is just a PINCH fit... if the EAR is too short, youi might have to put the clamp in a vice and bend it back to 90 degrees or a little more so the leg touches the flange... when you tightne the nut it PINCHES down
