Got an armadillo problem at the farm and is time to find a solution. My cure for them in the past has been 00 buck shot. The problem with this is I have to just happen to catch them out there. I've read by taking away the food source (grubs) they'll be discouraged from coming back. The problem I run in to with that is the area I need to treat. The total area I would say is roughly 3(?) acres by the time it's all included. To buy enough granular insecticide to spread over that area, I'll be fairly deep into it. Any home remedy ideas or just bite the bullet and kill some grubs?

If you figure it based on sq ft, there's 43560 in an acre. 1 10lb bag of insecticide covers 7500 sq ft so 6 bags per acre or 18 bags for 3 acres at $26/bag. Not a terrible expense but it's there something cheaper?

If you can find it, BT is the natural way to go, its the pathogen that infects grubs, and kills them...  Bacillus Thurengensis, IIRR.  Problem is there have been production problems, the past few years. It will self propagate and stay in the soil, if conditions are right..Wink

WE are using a Serious material, Local Farm Supply has it, Dimethoate.  ABSOLUTELY Vile.  NO Livestock, Pets nor Humans on the ground for up to four days after spraying.  1 quart to 10 acres in a water suspension pasturage spray,  for around a Home NO MORE THAN 1 PINT per 3-5 acres.  Will Not have grubs, worms, army caterpillar worms, NO burrowing or digging insects AT ALL.  Lasts upward of 4 months.  Local north of here had Army Worms, DESTROYED a Hay Field TWO Days, sprayed all around that as well on that and GONE in four.  Were so thick appeared ground was moving, ALL dead after.  Moles and Voles will leave, so too mice, Skunks and dillars will also leave.  if leave any in the barn or workshop exposed, even the spiders die off.  Did NOT and will not ask what I paid for it, just ran the card and brought Two gallons home.

Thanks Dave. The 4 days off wouldn't be easy but I'll see if I can find it and make it happen

The thing about BT, is that it's a naturally biologic, and (as Dave said)... self propogating.  It doesn't harm any animals or crops, unless you're farming Grubs... but when grubs EAT it, BT multiplies inside the grubs, and when they die, it persists in the soil, and keeps killing grubs... year after year... you don't have to re-treat... ever.

Works great for Japanese Beetles!!

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

.

No armadillos here, but bad woodchucks.

Solution was a flexible metal exhaust hose run from the utility tractor into the dens. Cover the exit and entrance (around the hose), idle ten to fifteen minutes. Go to the next hole.

If you see they dug out the next days, give them another dose. Rare second time, no thirds.

Game camera and a 22 mag.
If you can catch them they n camera for a few days you can figure out what time they’re showing up. Set an alarm and take care.
I had problems last fall. Got lucky and got one in the yard right after work one day. The rest were at night.
Shot 3 and haven’t had problems since.

This has been my method so far. Got 5 or 6 about 2 years ago and haven't seen any until now. 00 buck and they don't go far. I'd like to find a way to not have to keep up with them. The problem with finding the burrows is the hill I think they're in is too steep and brush covered to find them I'd say. It's too steep to mow with a Kubota SVL75 going up and down. Machine won't climb it. The BT solution really perked Danielle's ears so we may look into this

Maybe the girls like to hunt.  My youngest niece sure does.  Last week she spent most of the week freezing her tail off in a blind she made up the mountain---never saw a thing. Came home and the next morning at breakfast, her Dad says " look out the window" ! There is a nice big fat buck so she threw on her house coat, grabbed her rifle and nailed it.  She's now getting it ready for the freezer!

Cora probably would. Evie would wait for me to shoot it then try to save it then get mad then realize the damage it did then be ok. All within about 30 seconds
