I have a black bar grill D 14 I'm working on this winter. My eyes landed on the right brake pedal. And I'm thinking is this thing got AM casting numbers on everything. Then I looked at it. But then I realize I'm not looking at AM numbers. But a date tag, put on with two screws. I wonder if it was someones job to put that on as it came down the assembly line. And if it was, I know the day that tractor was made.

That would be the day the brake peddle was made, not the tractor. Hard to even guess haw far ahead some parts would be made

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

This morning I checked out that pedal more closely. Your right Paul, that's no tag. It is very elaborate for stamping, but that's what they did.

I would guess that the screw heads and what appears to be a tag are all part of the casting.  There would have been a tag screwed to the sacrificial insert that made the (sand?) mold that the cast iron was poured in. Thus leaving what appears to be screw heads.  It would probably be hard on several screw driver tips trying to get one to turn! Wink

PaulB and CS_IN are right - the tag is changed out on the pattern, so what you are seeing is a replica of the tag that was on the pattern that day when the casting material was poured into the mold, made from that pattern. That date would be from some time before the tractor was built (unless the pedal was replaced later on in the field). The foundry probably cast 1000 pedals at a time and they went in a big storage crate, and then 20 pedals per day were pulled out of that batch to build tractors down the assembly line.

Those are made up numbers but hopefully you get the idea.
