Friend and I got into a discussion Mon. about the mighty D-17, see. IV - did AC offer them in gas, propane, and diesel? We couldn't recall any ser. IV diesels in our communities! If they were available in diesel, was that engine an improvement over the earlier diesels - if so, what was different and improved?

I have a D-17 IV diesel. Same engine in Series III and IV. Same head gasket issues as the early ones. Work well with proper warm up and cool down and pump settings. Just old tech.

Have a series IV gas and diesel.  The diesel is a 6 cylinder 262 cubic inch engine.  One of the nicest sounding diesels out there in my opinion.  Proper warm up and cool down are very important though.
