| Hello all, has anyone used the steer clutch springs from general gear? I got my order of disks and springs Friday the replacements look like die springs the pressure checks @ 220lbs aprox on the springs but the 62 year oem rusty ones checked 250 to 285 @3 11/6 inch, oem spec shows 235 to 265 thats only 66% im concerned any input would be appreciated. the unit is a 62 or 63 hd11e. |

In general General Gear gets good reviews. But If you have specs for springs and a way to test them it make sense to check. No matter how hard one tries most stuff comes from China. I had a new to me 1950's Cat D6. Steering fine until it was not. Pull one steering clutch and you stopped. I want to say springs were less than 1/2 of spec. But my tester was not the greatest. Set a bathroom scale in my hydraulic press, pressed spring to what ever the length for spec was. Read what the bathroom scale read.

yes i did test them used a short stroke hydraulic cyl 2 inch bore filled with oil and a pressure gauge installed in the port and the quil on my cnc mill to push the spring down on the rod to checking height 3 11/16 inch then used a hydraulic force calculator from baum hydraulic to psi to calculate 335 and 365 psi 365 =115 at gauge reading i think 106 was 335# i checked 4 new springs 2 were 60#,1 was 65 and 1 was 72#.Next i stood on the end of the cyl and balanced on it it come out to me weighing 220 lbs, the bathroom scales showed 223 lbs so i feel its a solid test. i have some pics in my phone of fixture and readings i will try and post. I called general gear they seemed like good people i'm probably going to send them back , i do feel the were probably imported parts. The thing that sucks i work as a maint mech in a 2,000,000 square foot caterpillar facility in morton il and its not a d6 .
