My Culligan water filter housing takes O-ring "B" that comes in the 2-pack Culligan OR-34A; NOT two O-Rings that I can use, but one each of two different sizes, "A" and "B" I don't know this for fact; but, I believe that all the more recent Culligans use O-Ring A while my old antiques use ORing "B" The price of this 2-pack has gotten ridiculous and lately Walmart has not been having them. I see on Amazon that --- if I knew the exact dimensions of O-Ring "B", I can buy them in packs of 100 for less than ten cents apiece. I have found in several sources the exact measurements of O-Ring "A" as it must now be the more popular; but, no luck yet in finding the size of O-Ring "B" Do any of you guys know the exact dimensions of Culligan O-Ring "B" ? Thanks.

Six bucks a pack now. If I ever get something that uses the "A", I have enough to get by for years.
The way the filter housing is made and where the O-Ring goes makes it impossible to get even a close measurement and these larger diameter O-Rings don't lend themselves to getting an accurate measurement as they stretch and flop around too much. Thanks to the outside diameter provided at jaybmiller's link, which is the first place I have found that actually provides any hint at what they measure, because they know that once you know you will seek them out in bulk, I was able to measure the thickness of my last brand-new one, do the math, and determine the other two dimensions. I use silicon grease whenever I change filters because I was having trouble finding O rings. Milk hauler used the same grease on the O rings in his milk pump. |

I generously slather Petroleum Jelly on the O-Ring and pack the groove it sits in and then pack over the O-Ring once it is in the groove. I can get three or four years or more out of an O-Ring; but, finally, they get so squished that they refuse to seal. Also, a brand-new O-Ring after only it's first filter change, will be so impregnated with grit as to feel like 280-grit sand-paper. No amount of cleaning will remove this embedded grit. I don't know the scientific politically correct environmentally friendly word to describe what I mean; but, Petroleum Jelly is a water repellent and is impervious to water; it will not dissolve in water and stays exactly where you put it. Since it will not dissolve in water, it will not "get in" the water and make a bad taste or poison your entrails. I have never used either of the plumbing greases mentioned; but, I bet they have similar properties to Petroleum Jelly and may even be Petroleum Jelly.
