Anybody know about silage special hay rollers with "precutters" in them, how do they do in dry hay? What about the short pieces of hay. I am concerned about what happens when you get to the hay rack and remove the net wrap from the roll, do the short pieces make the bale fall to pieces? How about hay that is left over from the previous year with rot on the bottom, will it fall apart when picked up? Also read that there would be less waste at rack due to cows not dropping as much of the small pieces. Any thoughts?

I’ve never owned one but I have bought hay that was baled with one.

First off, my understanding is that the cutters can be disengaged so you have regular long stem bales. Maybe that depends on the make and model.

The bale pretty much falls to pieces once the wrap is off even when fresh. I feed my cows in a cattleman’s choice feeder wagon and they wasted quite a bit. There was a pile of hay all the way around the perimeter from pulling it out and/or slobbering it out while feeding. Seems like the waste was more but I don’t have scientific proof. Maybe in a bunk or deeper manger it would be better?

Don't know anything about the machine you are talking about. But, by the description of the bale, I would guess it is for operations that run their hay through a mixer wagon. Allows them to skip having to grind it first.

Just a wild guess.
