How does a person remove the shaft from a 172 Rotary Cutter for the purpose of replacing the bearing at the bottom of the shaft? I am assuming to open the back plate of the gear box, but I am not sure what I will find when I do. Is the bearing easy to come by? |

| you have to take the gearbox apart, theres a gear on the end of that shaft you need to pull off, so the shaft can drop out. There is a bearing behind the gear, and there is supposed to be a seal on the bottom of that housing, in your picture |

I just rebuilt the gearbox on my 160 mower last year. We are lucky to have an old time type local farm store. I took in all my old bearings and seals and left with brand new ones. You won't find a "kit" but everything should be available. I don't rememebr exactly now but you can tighten up the bottom bearing by making a thinner shim out of some gasket material. I didn't realize this until I was putitng mine back together. I wouldn't have needed to buy new bearing.

Allis Chalmers used standard sizes, so everything is available through a bearing house, except the gaskets, which you have to make. The shaft you're dealing with you have to set the load with a locknut that's holding the gear on, the cross shaft has shims |

| What should the lock nut be tightened to in order to set the load? It seems like it may be difficult to remove based on the space available. Do you happen to know the size of the lock nut? 1 1/2? |

I can measure it, the way I do it is to tighten it down until you feel a slight drag, and then leave it, too tight is worse than slightly lose. 1 5/16 the nut NF 2" socket, you have to heat the gear to get it off

| Sorry, I have not done this before and trying to learn as I go. The nut came off but the gear is not cooperating. I broke 3 Chinese gear pullers after heating the gear up. I guess I need a serious puller after heating the gear up? |
