My Son-in-law's HD5G had a couple of track pad bolts come loose so he bought a few used ones from General Gear in Boise. So far so good, but they didn't have very many available, and they said that normally they just torch them off and don't attempt to salvage track bolts.
I have an HD5 Parts Manual, and it lists the track pad bolts as 1/2" NF. Yes, the threads are indeed 1/2" NF, but the shank of the bolts measure right at 0.530", or roughly 17/32".
The original bolts fit quite snugly in the holes, and a standard 1/2" bolt rattles around fairly loose.
Does anyone know of a source for new, correct bolts for these machines?

Check with ITP - Link here: https://industrialtractorparts.com/" rel="nofollow - https://industrialtractorparts.com/
Last I knew they had a shop in Wisconsin, one in near NYC and in a few other states.

The world keeps moving on, an this old guy does not.
But anyway Caterpillar use to have a on line publication called
One Safe Source had all their hardware listed
At one time 40 years ago Cat hardware was the best and in many cases cheaper than than lesser products. But from things on ACMOC some dealers seem to price it high to keep incidental business away.

Yes track bolts are different from standard hardened bolt , both in shank size below head as well as head itself , then nut for bolt also differs . And Hardware store bolts of grade 2 , grade 5 and even grade 8 are not going to work for long , same for nuts as track nuts are square in many cases and also longer thread area , but are sized t be captive in track link
