I rebuilt the steering clutches on my H3 and reassembling. Right side went together like a champ. The left side though is almost back together but the drive spline will not slip into the clutch. Using bore scope, it looks like the splines line up with the clutch on the top, but on the bottom, the splines are not lining up and won’t slip in…I am at a loss…any suggestions?

Do you have any way of posting pictures of the view through the bore scope?

I removed both clutch packs and found the splines are different, so I guess there is a left and right side and I put them in backwards.  I haven't reinstalled but I think that is the issue - the drive spline and clutch packs are matched.

I think you can see the difference in the two packs

The distortion of the photos makes it a bit difficult to tell for certain, but it appears that the the splines actually vary in width. Is this correct?

Thanks for the feedback Smile

They are but it looks like wear

I swapped the left and right. The right went in and the left is still not fitting

Any progress?

I downloaded an H3 Service Manual, it isn't very clear; are the shafts reversible?

I took the clutch apart and worked with only the hud and shaft so I could see. Once the hub is bolted up to the flange, the shaft is out of line with the hub..not much nut just enough that the shaft won’t insert. Not sure how that happened but probably explains the wear on the hub. I am thinking on shim the clutch on the flange to fix the alignment issue. Will try to post pics.

Hello all

Thanks for the advice and I got it in. Still not sure why there is a mis-alignment. Just need to decide if I want to shim or just bolt it up. I guess it’s been bolted up that way for 60 years.
