I have an old all terrain forklift I am getting up and running. I had the head rebuilt and finally got it running. It runs great so far, and I am very happy with it. I got it for scrap price, so I am playing with house money.

I had a question about getting the hydraulics back up and working. Is there anything I should do as a preventative measure with the hydraulic system? I have heard tell about flushing the system out, but I don't know what that looks like specifically.

I thought I better ask before I make a mistake, I am new to tractors and hydraulics. I also have a knuckle boom crane and the same with that...

If the oil looks clean I wouldn't change it if it were my machine, unless it seems to have water in it. There's no harm in changing the hyd. fluid and the advantage with a forklift is that most of the oil is back in the tank when the forks are on the ground. When you have equipment-hydraulics with numerous cylinders oil changes are only a partial help as so much oil is still contained in the cylinders etc.

I took off the filter and the oil looks ok. It is totally empty, but I found signs of leaking. It hasn't run in about ten years, so everything seems to be broken. My plan is to fill the hydro system slowly and then look for leaks.

Anyone know the fluid filter number? I can read 5----- and the rest is rusted. Looks like 5 digits. it's a wix filter.

While I am at It, I have a question with a low probability of an answer. My forklift has a cooler on it that sits on the radiator and the lines run down to the pump left side of the forklift, by the driver's left heel. I have heard it called the 'underbody' pump. Anyone know where those lines should go? Or even if they were stock? that might be my leak, maybe the cooler had lines run to it for the hydraulic fluid.

Gotta love putting together something that was partially taken apart and left for dead.

I got the hydraulics up and working! Just needed fluid and it looks clean so far. I'll have to keep checking for leaks because I assume it all leaked out so maybe one of the lowest hoses in terms of altitude.

Also, I think I figured out the cover on the shuttle clutch. I haven't had time to mess with it yet, but it looks like the lines go to an oil cooler, on the radiator. I guess that clutch builds up some heat. Right now, I am pretty sure one of the lines is hooked up to the hydraulic system, perhaps incorrectly, and my best guess is the cooler lines run thru the cover for the shuttle clutch, as a bulkhead, and one is low pressure and one is return...not sure yet...
