what are the differances between series 1 and series 4 and newer 226 engines ? lube lines are a little differant and power steering pump what other things ,

Series 1 had old oil filtering system like a WD-45 and could be somewhat problematic having good oil pressure. They also had short reach 3/8" spark plugs and a WD-45 muffler. At about chassis s/n 24001 (series 2 ?) they went to the "full-flow" oiling system that had an oil pump speed increase, constant oil filtering and better overall oil pressure. It was about this time they went to 3/4" reach spark plugs. Round muffler got larger in diameter too. Series 3 got an oval muffler and dry type air cleaner and belt driven power steering pump. Series 4 got the "tuff-trided" hard surfaced crankshaft.

Series 2 started at 32,001, so there were roughly 8,000 Series 1 that had the full pressure lube block.

That unofficial "Series 2" vintage is somewhat cornfusing. From 1957 to sometime in 59 were the originals. Then, they went to the black/silver grille screens with the bars across the screen and a black plastic steering wheel and a hood decal change. I guess these should be called Series 1.5 , because they were surely different than the originals. Then, the Series 2 with a paint color change, hood emblems, wide drawbar bail,etc,etc.

are the front covers the same i noticed that their is 7/16 bolts for water pump wd block is 3/8 and crank snout is longer from end to centering bolt when trying to put on a wd pulley how much of the front cover on the series 1 is wd wd45 , their is a bolt boss on the series 4 that sticks out right in the way to clear the radiator hose with a older waterpump , i have seeing a lot of differant things on the 201 226 engines while building my puller engine trying to use all my bone yard parts that i can they are more diffferant than they look

You didn't ask to compare to a W-201/226. Yes indeedy, there are some differences just as you have discovered when they went from the W-series to the G-series. Front covers are very similar but NOT identical. They will interchange if you drill out the lower holes to 7/16". Fan belt will run a little crooked, but it's a puller. What diff does that make ??

thought it was ineteresting little subject. have a parts tractor that is a series 1 that has a rod out the bottom of the pan i am going to go see what spark plugs are in that head see if its a earlyer head or a later and compare front covers from th1 series 1 to the series 4 see how much differant the gen. brackets are, are govenor parts the same.
