I'm trying to help an elderly neighbor out, with steering issues on his 8030 fwd. Initially, I just assumed it was low on hyd oil because it wandered all over the road while driving and the steering cylinder up front had leaking seals. We rebuilt the cylinder and added correct amounts of oil but I can spin the steering wheel all I want but can't get any action at the front end. Could this be a problem with air in the system or do I have problems up near the firewall, closer to the steering wheel? I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Do all the rest of the hydraulics work?? and the tractor moves ??  I'm going to guess that the splines on the bottom end of the steering wheel shaft have worn out/stripped.

Yes Dr. the tractor drives fine and as far as I know, the 3 point & hyd work good. So what is the best way to go about checking the splines? Would that be the shaft going into the "steering motor" by the rear of engine? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Yup. There should be a foam rubber seal covering this area to keep dirt out of it, which makes the splines wear out. After 40 years, I'll bet the foam rubber seal is gone.

Sadly, I don't have a tech manual for this model but I assume if I remove the "steering motor" with the hoses attached, I will be able to see the splines. But then Im guessing the splined steering shaft will have to be removed, rearward thru the cab.

Next question is...do you have a suggestion on where to get parts? Just stick with AGCO dealer?

AGCO dealer only. I hope they can get the parts. A used steering orbitrol off of a 7000 (7010 and up) series will work if it is a 2 wheel drive.
